Westville, Oklahoma (08/24/11) – Jason Hughes powered his #12 West Siloam Pawn/Gressel Racing/Hughes/Mullins Race Engines Open Wheel Modified to his first victory in the 2011 Casey's General USMTS Hunt Title last Wednesday at Ogilvie Raceway (Ogilvie, Minnesota).
Below is a blog-style recap of Jason's recent events:
August 17th, 2011 - Jason scored his first win of the 2011 Casey's General USMTS Hunt on Wednesday night at Ogilvie Raceway (Ogilvie, Minnesota). With 37 entries on hand Hughes advanced from the fourth starting spot to claim his heat race win, which locked him into the redraw for the 40 lap, $2,000-to-win feature.
After receiving the fourth starting spot for the main event in the redraw, Hughes would move past Corey Dripps for the second spot on lap 13, and by lap 23 he was pressuring Jon Tesch for the lead as the front runners encountered lap traffic. The 28th circuit would see Hughes move to the top spot with Gustin soon moving into the second spot to pressure the leader. Jason would fend away the advances of Gustin to claim the win. Gustin, Tesch, Kelly Shryock, and Jason Jensen rounded out the top five at the checkered flag. The win was eleventh overall on the 2011 season.
August 18th, 2011 - The Casey's General USMTS Hunt rolled into Rice Lake Speedway (Rice Lake, Wisconsin) on Thursday night for another $2,000-to-win event. The night started well for Hughes as he charged from the back of his heat race to finish second, which locked him into the redraw for the feature. Unfortunately he would receive the 8th starting spot for the feature from the redraw, which put several good cars between him and the front of the pack. In the main event he would only manage to advance a single position to a seventh place finish.
August 19th, 2011 - On Friday night Jason Hughes took part in the Casey's General USMTS Hunt event at Mississippi Thunder Speedway (Fountain City, Wisconsin) as 42 entries registered for action. It would prove to be a long, frustrating night for Hughes as he saw mechanical issues in his heat race force him to a last place finish in the heat and a scratch from the b-main. He would utilize a series' provisional to start 27th on the grid for the 40 lap, $2,000-to-win feature. Despite starting last in the field, Jason would pass thirteen cars in the feature on his way to a 14th place finish, which earned him the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.
August 20th, 2011 - The ultra-busy weekend for the Casey's General USMTS competitors continued on Saturday evening at Hamilton County Speedway (Webster City, Iowa). With 28 Open Wheel Modifieds entered into the $2,000-to-win event Jason started the night by finishing second in his heat race to earn the ninth starting spot for the 40 lap feature. In the main event he would methodically work his way through the pack, and by the time that the checkered flag fell he had registered a second place finish behind race winner, Kelly Shryock.
August 21st, 2011 - Jason wrapped up a five day stretch of action with the Casey's General USMTS tour on Sunday night at Noble County Speedway (Worthington, Minnesota) in what would prove to be a rough night for the team. Twenty-six competitors registered for the program, and after finishing second in his heat race, Jason locked into the redraw for the feature, where he received the fifth starting spot. Hughes would battle in the top ten for the first half of the feature before mechanical issues brought his feature to an end on lap 30 in the 20th position.
Hughes is now third in the national standings behind Ryan Gustin and Shryock, and Hughes Race Cars leads the Tiger Rear Ends Manufacturer's Championship points. Full results and the latest tour standings are available at www.USMTS.com.
This weekend, August 25th-27th, Jason will have the opportunity to make up ground in the point's battle as he will resume action with the Casey's General USMTS Hunt with a trio of events. On Thursday night the tour will invade I-35 Speedway (Winston, Missouri) before moving onto Cedar County Speedway (Tipton, Iowa) on Friday night and will conclude on Saturday night at Upper Iowa Speedway (Decorah, Iowa).
