Nascar Star Kenny Schrader Continues Quest for Du Quoin Victory.

NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Ken Schrader announced yesterday his intention to compete in the Best Western Challenge for the Crate American Racing Series Late Models at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds as part of the opening day of a three day program of motorized events on the "Magic Mile". Barring a weather delay in the 500 lap NASCAR event at Bristol Saturday night, the Fenton, Missouri native should be on the grounds Sunday morning to join a growing list of C.A.R.S. pilots seeking the $1500 first prize in the late model main event, which joins the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series for a day of racing in Southern Illinois.

The fifty one year old Schrader made his USAC Stock Car debut at the DuQuoin State Fair in 1979 and since that time has posted wins on the Indiana State Fair mile and the Springfield mile in various types of machinery, but ironically has yet to post a main event win on the "Magic Mile" at DuQuoin in any type of race car. Schrader considers the DuQuoin facility one of his favorite tracks and the dirt fairground mile closest to his Fenton, Missouri home. Schrader continues the interest in the DuQuoin track by a number of NASCAR Nextel Cup pilots that began with the appearance of Schrader and Tony Stewart in 2001. In fact, Schrader will have a second chance at a DuQuoin win as he has filed an entry for the Labor Day Federated-Southern Illinois 100 ARCA RE/MAX Series stock car race.

Gates open at 9 a.m. with qualifications at approximately 11 and the flying start of the Best Western-DuQuoin 50 at 2 p.m. The C.A.R.S. Best Western Challenge late model feature will precede the main event for the ARCA Lincoln Welders trucks and the C.A.R.S. late models will be racing for a $1,500 first prize for capturing the 20 mile Best Western Challenge. Tickets can be obtained by calling the DuQuoin State Fair Box office at 618-542-1535, Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or at any Ticketmaster location. Tickets are $15 for adults and just $5 for children.
