Farmington, MO (June 27) -- On this pre July 4th weekend the POWRi National Micro Sprints were in town for their annual visit. Thirty-eight of the Micros were in the pit area for this Soaring Eagle Distributing event.

The “King” held court and came away with the race win. Defending POWRi Micro Sprint Champion, Dereck King, Vienna, IL made the pass for the lead and the win on Lap 17 of the scheduled 20 lap event.

King had his work cut out for him as he started third. Local and regular driver at St Francois County Raceway, Kyle Amerson of Wildwood, MO, started the event on the pole position along side Brunson Behning, of Calamus, IA.

The first attempt at a start failed. On the second attempt Amerson jumped into the lead and closely contested by Behning. King, JoeB Miller, Millersville, MO and Ryan Kempin, Catawissa, MO in hot pursuit and fighting for their own track position.

Amerson and Behning stayed in front of the field for the most of the event. On Lap 12 Behning lost control of his car, while running second, brought out the only yellow of the event. Behning restarted and finished 19th.

On the restart Amerson picked up where he left off. Only difference was King in the second position. Slow traffic came into play and help decide the outcome. Brian Keen, Desloge, MO was in the middle of the exchange for the lead.

Amerson, Miller and King were three wide for the lead heading down the back stretch. Miller had his chance to take the lead, but King out gunned him into turn three.

King stretched out his track position for the win followed by Miller, Amerson, Ryan Kempin, and a nice fifth place finish for Garrett Worley, Doe Run, MO.

Sprint Car action found a familiar face returning to the winners circle. Jerrod Hull, Sikeston, MO came home the winner, but made it exciting at the end of the event for the win.

The event started with Tommy Worley, Jr on the front row with opening night winner Casey Barnhouse, Farmington, MO. Also joining in the early chase were Hull, and Ros Crabdree. These four made some hay in the early going. Worley returned to the track following last weeks terrible accident and score wins in his heat and the dash. He had the feature covered until a spinning Joey Boyd, Farmington, MO blocked the groove he was running. Tommy locked up the brakes on his machine to avoid, but could not. Worley restarted at the end of the field and Worley worked his way back to a fifth place finish.

After the caution for the Boyd incident, Rod Crabdree was in a position to win his first feature in a while. In his Quentin Campbell owned machine, Crabdree raced out to a fiur car length lead over Hull, Joey Montgomery and Steve Short. Hull was closing lap by lap. Crabdree fought him off, but a lap 16 caution for Tom Dickerman closed up the field. Hull made his pass for the lead coming of turn four and finished in fine shape for his third win of the season. Crabdree hung on for second as a hard charging Joey Montgomery finished third. Steve Short and Tommy Worley completed the top five.

During intermission several drivers went into the stands to pass the helmet for our departed friend Dennis Frank. The fans found it in their hearts to give. The last count we were given was $800 with more continuing to come in. Thanks to the fans, crews, drivers, and workers for their support. Parade lap before the feature was the traditional four wide formation in his honor.

Intermission also included a great fireworks display. Fireworks from ACA Fireworks three locations lit up the night sky. ACA is located at the St Francois County Raceway grounds, nest to Hardee’s in Potosi, and P & L’s Store on 8 west by AA Highway.

Modified action was great as always. This division is so close any of the these competitors are capable of a win. After last weeks “robbery” by Outlaw Rusty Griffaw, our regulars were all looking for the winners circle.

Brent Thompson, Park Hills, MO, has been absent from their since opening night. However, on this night he found his way back. Without the aid of a map. Thompson would have to battle Shannon Blair, Point Leader David Shepard, Matt Eaton and Cody Conner. Close racing ensued for the duration of the event. However caution periods did not allow for any extended runs. The final caution came out on lap 10 of the 15 lap event. Thompson and Shepard were literally door to door on more than one occasion. Paint exchange was very possible between the two, but it appeared none was exchanged. Thompson said in his post race interview, he enjoyed racing with Dave, Matt and Billy. He also thanked Dave for running him clean.

After the races we spoke to Shepard and he told us Thompson and he were in a chess type match. Taking each others lines of entry at opposite ends of the track. Shepard did take the lead for a brief moment, only to have a caution wave. He also thanked Brent for the clean run.

Thompson claimed his second win of the season with Shepard finishing second, Matt Eaton third, Jeremy Greenwalt fourth and Billy Smith in fifth.

Pure Street action saw point Leader Brian Blair pick up win number five on the season. Mike Savage, Shane Blair, Chris Boyd and Robby Wells finished the top five.

With the Fourth of July upon us, racing at St Francois County Raceway will take the weekend off. We will return to our regular racing program on Saturday, July 11th. When racing resumes it will be our $5.00 night in the grandstand for the month of July. Checkout the track website at www.sfcr-online.com.
