SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, NM (September 13) – Steve Kinser extended his Hollywood Hills Speedway winning streak to seven features Saturday while increasing his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points lead to 27.

The defending and 17-time series champion passed pole-sitter Jason Sides late in the second lap and held off the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate throughout the final 28¼ laps to remain undefeated at San Felipe Pueblo’s semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval.

“We’ve run good here every time,” said Kinser, who won his first feature race at Hollywood Hills on March 9, 2002. “It was really tough to pass tonight. I caught Jason coming out of turn four and just held on from there.

“We have a long way to go (10 events over 15 dates), and there are a lot of races left. It’s been back and forth (at the top of the standings) all year long, and I don’t see that changing now.”

Kinser’s 22nd “A” Feature victory of the season added 14 points to his advantage over 2001 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion Danny Lasoski, who finished in fifth place

“The King of the Outlaws,” the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field, won every race he entered Saturday: the Fourth Heat Race, the Second Dash Race and the 30-lap main event.

Sides, who won the First Dash Race, drove the #7S Aramark/Ozark Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the 57th main event of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season. Bud Goodwin flipped in turn three, however, bringing back the original start. Jeff Slinkard, Johnny Herrera and First Heat Race winner Paul McMahan were also involved in the crash, but none of the drivers were injured.

Sides, burst into the lead again when the green flag replaced the red. Kinser, whose crew replaced the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim following the qualifying session, chased Sides for 1 ¾ laps before passing him deep in the fourth corner.

Shane Stewart, competing with the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series for the first time since the August 18th event at the Jetmore Motorplex, started outside the sixth row. He raced past two cars during the first two laps, then took the low line through turn four to pass Jason Meyers for ninth place the next time around. Stewart and Second Heat Race winner Gary Taylor were battling for eighth place late in lap five, when their collision sent Taylor spinning into the infield.

The leaders were approaching lapped traffic four laps later when “B” Feature winner Jonathan Allard spun off the front stretch and into the infield.

Fast qualifier Donny Schatz steered his #15 Parker Stores J&J into the low groove in turn four to pass Brian Brown on the restart, then took third place from Tim Shaffer three laps later.

Kinser was 2.9 seconds ahead of Sides when he entered lapped traffic midway through the race. Jason Martin lost 10th place and opened the track ahead of the leaders three laps later when he spun in the fourth corner.

Brown drove the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim past Shaffer deep in turn three to take over fourth place within a lap after the race resumed.

Kinser enjoyed a 3.4-second advantage with 3½ laps remaining, only to have Sides cut it in half in dense lapped traffic within two laps.

Shaffer surrendered fourth place and set the stage for a two-lap dash to the checkered flag when the #83 Beef Packers Eagle spun in the fourth corner late in lap 29.

Kinser raced away as the green flag replaced the yellow, and took the checkered flag with 1.2 seconds to spare. Sides’ runner-up run tied his career-best finish in an O’Reilly World of Outlaws “A” Feature.

Schatz finished in third place, ahead of Brown, Lasoski, Stewart, Meyers, McMahan, 16th-starting Joey Saldana and Brian Paulus.

Mechanical problems in the #21 Hop & Sack J&J kept Daryn Pittman from starting the First Heat Race and from qualifying for the main event through the “B” Feature. His crew was replacing his engine as the green flag fell in the First Heat Race and a fuel leak forced him to start at the rear of the “B” Feature. Robert Gomez and Patrick Bourke were unable to take the green flag in the “A” Feature, however, allowing Pittman to start at the rear of the field. Given the opportunity to start the main event, the 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion raced past 12 cars to finish in 12th place.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will sanction the One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals at Eagle Raceway Friday and Saturday. WoO
