The waiting is over for fans and drivers when the dirt starts to fly on the clay oval bullring at Warrensburg’s own Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) this Saturday evening. KOKO AM 1450 radio will be on hand to open the CMS race season along with the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce. Chamber members are invited to join a pre-race tailgate party event sponsored by KOKO radio in the parking area at 5 p.m.

Earl and Susan Walls have been busy during the off-season making numerous track improvements for their seventeenth year of operation at the storied speedway. Race fans will notice the new concession and restrooms in the steeple barn building at the grandstand entrance off of Hwy 13. There are walk-up windows to order and pick-up food along with a new bar area inside the building. Another twenty six loads of clay were brought in after the season ended last year and the track prep crew has been working the clay mixture into the surface, which will once again prove to be one of the smoothest around.

Who will be the first driver to visit the Waterloo Victory Lane and take home a new tool box courtesy of Waterloo Industries? The opening night of competition includes the ‘mighty’ modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds on Saturday evening. The pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. with grandstand admission opening at 5. Hot-laps will be underway at 7 and racing will begin at 7:30.

Thank you to the twenty drivers who participated last Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Warrensburg Lowe’s store when they showed off their sparkling racing machines for local fans. Fans had a chance to vote for their favorite cars and the winners of the best in show awards in each division will be recognized on opening night. After the car show, forty seven drivers tested their machines on the smooth clay surface to prepare for opening night and another season of exciting racing action. All four classes were represented along with five 600cc micro-sprints turning some of the fastest times of the night.

The micro-sprints will join the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) and Winged Outlaw Warrior (WOW) 360 sprints for an early season open wheel special on April 30. This race marks the first return of sprints since 2005 when the 305 sprints raced at CMS on a weekly basis. A young driver named Josh Fisher was the 2005 track champion before advancing on into the WOW 360 sprint series. Many of those same drivers are expected to return to the high-banked track for this special Friday night event.

The 2010 race schedule on tap this year is the most aggressive in its long history and fans of all types of dirt-track racing are in for a real treat. Regular admission prices for this year are $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens 65 and up, college students w/school I.D., young adults age 13 to 17 w/school I.D., and military members with I.D. Children aged six to twelve are $6 and children five and under are free. Be sure to keep an eye out in your favorite local newspapers this season for special CMS admission coupons.
