Haubstadt, IN. July 17, 2005. Cory Kruseman of Ventura, California, continued in his mastery of the annual USAC Indiana Sprint Week event held at Tri-State Speedway on Sunday night.

Kruseman’s victory in the 30 lap feature was worth $5,000. It was the fourth time since the 2000 season that he has captured the Haubstadt event during the series. Kruseman started fourth as the green waved over the 24 car starting field and was second by lap three. Sixteen year old USAC Rookie Brian Clauson was leading and held the lead until lap 20. A yellow flag after lap 19 had tightened the field.

Cory Kruseman explained how the resulting single file restart became a winning opportunity. “Brian was running on top. He missed two and then got sideways on the backstretch. I was able to come across the bottom.” Kruseman was in the lead exiting turn four. A second California driver Damion Gardner followed later with a last lap pass to capture second place. Clauson held on to third finishing ahead of Levi Jones and Tracy Hines. The victory was Kruseman’s second victory of the week, as he also won Thursday’s opening night show.

Numerous preliminary events set the feature lineup. Justin Marvel set quick time with a 12.903 second clocking. He was seventh later in the main event behind Josh Wise. Kyle Wissmiller, John Wolfe, Mitch Wissmiller, and Rookie Brady Short won the four heat races. Jay Drake won the 20 car, 12 lap B-main over Clauson. Two short Last Chance races qualified winners Lee Boss and Hud Cone into regular heat race lineups.

Brad Sweet escaped injury when his sprint flipped over the turn two billboards during time trials and landed outside the track in the pit area. The car could not be repaired in time for Sweet to compete in the night’s program. Dickie Gaines also flipped in turn one during hot laps but his crew had him back on the track in time to qualify. New Jersey driver Tom Hessert III brought out a yellow flag during the feature after his car rolled over in troublesome turn two.

Tim Dierlam of Chandler, IN., turned in a speedy performance in the Dave Collins’ Modified to capture the 25 lap UMP feature.

Dierlam led the entire race although a field of tough competitors had assembled for the evening. “Probably 10 other drivers could have won here tonight,” he quipped. “Starting on the front row of the feature was a big deal with the track like it was tonight.”

Drivers found the preferred line along the bottom 60 percent of the dirt surface. There close battles and contact soon evolved. Clayton Miller battled with Everett Bradham, finally taking the runner-up spot with just two laps to go. Randle Sweeney moved up through traffic to finish fourth.
Michael Fox was fifth. Drivers testing the top five before falling out of the race were Ronnie Falloway and Danny Claycomb.

The next race at Tri-State speedway will be on Saturday night July 30th. That night the Midwest Sprint Car Series will be involved in the Hoosier Sprint Nationals, a $10,000 to win event. The popular
UMP Modifieds will also race on the card.
