BELLEVILLE, Kan. (July 2) – The celebration of 100 years of auto racing at the Belleville High Banks kicked off Friday night with the inaugural running of the RevHoney Energy Belleville 100 at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Dirt Track.”
While several of the most talented and fearless dirt Modified drivers descended on Belleville, Kan., for the one-of-a-kind event, only Jared Landers will enter Saturday’s program with the dream of leaving town with a $100,000 payday.
Landers’ first-ever trip to the Belleville High Banks proved fruitful as the 28-year-old dominated the final half of the 40-lap main event and pocketed $5,000 for his efforts. With the win, Landers earned the pole position for the start of Saturday’s 60-lap championship “A” Main, but prior to the start of the blockbuster finale he will be offered the option of starting dead last and go for a whopping $100,000 paycheck if he can win or she can win from the 30th starting position.
Ryan Gustin – the youngest driver in Friday’s field and coming off a spectacular stretch last week where he won five straight USMTS events – drew the pole for the “A” main and led the first six laps before Landers used a low-side pass to grab the lead on lap 7. One lap later, Gustin’s maiden voyage to Belleville ended with a broken brake line.
By lap 12, multi-time Belleville feature winner John Allen had moved into second place and pressured Landers until a mandatory red flag on lap 20 to give competitors a 10-minute pit stop on the front stretch to make changes to their machines.
Whatever Landers’ crew decided to adjust during the break must have been the right decision. When the green flag waved to start the second 20-lap segment, he sailed away from the pack and cruised to the checkered flag to score the win nearly five seconds ahead of Tim Donlinger.
Allen, meanwhile, rebounded from a spin on lap 22 and a flat tire on lap 25 to challenge for the runner-up spot by the end of the contest. While Landers was long gone, the final lap was a nail-biting slugfest as Allen, Donlinger and John Anderson traded jabs as they also tried to negotiate around a lapped car.
Donlinger took the lowest route down the back-stretch and paced Allen to the finish line while Anderson, who also clawed his way from the back of the pack after a flat tire in the early laps of the contest, finished fourth.
Jason Teague scored the fifth spot, Grant Junghans bounced back from a mid-race spin to finish sixth, seventh went to Brandon Blochlinger, Austin Siebert earned an eight-place paycheck, Clint Gilmore nabbed ninth and Greg Sharpe rounded out the top-10 finishers at the flagstand.
The top-10 finishers are locked into Saturday night’s finale. Saturday’s program will feature another round of qualifying events, followed by the 60-lap championship “A” main with 30 cars starting three-wide.
A top prize of $10,000 is earmarked for the winner, unless the winner is Landers and he starts 30th, and then the amount increases ten-fold to $100,000. The main event will pay a minimum of $1,000 for each of the 30 starters.
Saturday will also feature a 15-lap non-qualifiers race for 20 drivers failing to make it into “the big dance” racing for $2,000 to win and $300 to start.
The main event will see a unique twist when the race is red-flagged on lap 30 for a 10-minute pit stop that will take place on the front stretch in front of the grandstands.
Sunday will conclude the Fourth of July Holiday with a dazzling auto thrill show and other entertainment suitable for a 100-year celebration of auto racing, including the Pig 100 — a not-so-light-hearted special event featuring real live pigs and a shot at $500 for one lucky participant.
