MONROETON, Pa. (June 15) – A last-turn pass gave Chris Fleming the $1,000 win in Wednesday’s World Products Empire State Series feature at Dunn Hill 2 Speedway.
The defending IMCA Modified series champion and first-time tour winner dived under a lapped car and caught race-long leader Eddie Sites coming out of the final turn.
“That was the only chance I had,” the new 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier said from victory lane. “I took it and it paid off.”
Sites, Kevan Cook, Mike Wilmot and Ed McKernan rounded out the top five.
Sites and Cook brought the field to green for the 25-lap feature. Sites took the lead and got all sorts of pressure from Cook and Fleming before a lap three yellow.
The battle for second continued after the restart with Fleming finally grabbing the spot for good and moving up to challenge Sites.
A caution on lap 16 bunched the field again with Sites, Fleming, Cook, Wilmot and Jerry Lobdell Jr. occupying the top five spots. Sites couldn’t shake Fleming, who moved to the inside and under a lapped car, then made his late pass stick for the lead and the $1,000 checkers.
McKernan came from last despite to a flat tire on the pace lap to win the MR Graphix hard charger award and the North Country Custom Rookie of the Race award. Seventh place finisher Mike Wilbur won the MR Graphix random finisher award.
The Empire State Series returns to Monroeton for the fourth installment of the 2011 tour on Wednes¬day, Aug. 10.
