With the higher cost of modern day UMP or IMCA type modifieds, many tracks in Texas and Louisiana have added a new limited modified class. Here are a copy of the rules used by most of these tracks. They seem a lot less costly....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIMS/ULMA Limited Modified Rules
January 1, 2004 thru December 31, 2008

IF IT DOESN'T SAY YOU CAN,
THEN THAT MEANS YOU CAN'T!!!

To race at any SIMS/ULMA Sanctioned track,
you must be a member in good standing with SIMS/ULMA.

To collect your purse at any SIMS/ULMA track,
you will have to present a current SIMS/ULMA membership card
or a receipt of purchase.

These rules have been interpreted to be track and racer friendly.

At any time, any SIMS/ULMA registered driver may protest any visible or non-visible part on another car for a fee of $100 per part.

If the car being protested is found legal then said car shall receive $50 with $25 going to the track and $25 going to SIMS/ULMA per part.

If said car is found illegal, the protester will receive $50 with $25 going to the track and $25 going to SIMS/ULMA per part.

It is at the tracks' discretion on what tech procedure to use.

We hope that the simplification and clarifications of these rules make for a great future for all.

Jimmy D.

Is there a reason you posted this? A new class at a local track or tracks? Or just an informative post?:D

Just a post to see what people think about their very limited rules and if it would be a viable class around here.

When modifieds were first introduced to this area about 15 years ago, they were supposed to be the lower-cost alternative to Late Models. Now that they cost about the same, more modified racers are making the jump. Mike Null saw that problem 10 years ago, and invented the B-Modified class at St Charles Speedway. Sounds like this class is just that region's version of B-Modifieds. Many drivers in the UMP class of Modified would be doing themselves a favor by running B's for a season or 2 until they get the hang of the cars.

Doug
Mike Null never wanted the b-mods because they evolved from Allied Limited Sportsmen. This is one of the reasons they always ran last at St. Charles.

A group of drivers talked Mel and Lillian Hemsath into letting them run at St.Charles. Every week it was a battle to stay at St.Charles If you want to know where the b-mods came from around here talk to Terry White, Gary Wilson, or Kevin Graf. Them and myself were the one's who got the class going at St.Charles.

I like it! Seems to me that you could upgrade one of these to a full on UMP mod when you want to move up.

I only have 2 issues with the rules...

They should allow Vortech heads and also tubular upper a-arms. the stockers are going to get scarce sooner or later.

Tim

Sounds like a pretty good idea, but some things like specific radiator size and things that will not affect cost and/or performance could be removed. With the amount of used parts out there to buy, like upper control arms mentioned above, you can get them cheaper than stock parts. Also, in my opinion, going to a 7.5 inch multidisk clutch is cheaper than a lot of the aftermarket stock replacement ones that people would be using and get a performance advantage from. This is definately a step in the right direction for someone building a car on a budget. I saw an article recently about IMCA starting a new lower end modified/sportsman class that sounds pretty good also. Anything to get the prices down. Have any tracks tried the GM Crate Motors on dirt yet?

I think..a lower priced class of modified would really fly around here. In fact..i just talked to someone who owns a track around here..and..they are thinking of it already anyway. I love the b mods..alot..and..this would be a cool class to.

That is a very good idea, and a very bad set of rules to do it with. Way too many specifications, that set of rules will have the top cars costing as much as top IMCA cars now, and unable to compete with them ever.

Also it sounds like they are to greedy, they get half the protest money legal or not. That is just wrong, if legal the protested should get it all, if not legal the protester should not loose any money. Only paid members can get paid, that bs also.

Alot of constructive ideas as to how to fix this set of rules might be fun, if everyone doesn't get mad at each other over how they want to do it.

a low cost mod is a great idea how to do it is the question. these rules would be a tech man's nightmare put a super hard tire on the right rear and let the tire do the work. there's my 2 cents maybe a 365 cid limit no roller flat top could help oh 2 cents more huh?

I think its sounds like a half *** mod with a bomber engine. I also think the b mod and steel block classes around here are a joke. I think a UMP mod with an Allied drive train would work the best as an econo mod class.
