(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway fans were able to meet and show appreciation to their favorite drivers before the start of the evening’s racing program tonight. A large number of cars and drivers lined the 1/5 mile oval to spend time with their fans.
The Sportsman division set the stage for a night of exciting and terrific racing. For the second time in as many weeks, Greg Kimmons of Pleasant Plains was able to fight off a tough field and win the first heat. With that, an action-packed night of racing was under way.
In the BARBECK Communications Modified heat, Randy Myers of Springfield won his first race of the year. The second heat was certainly one to be remembered as Al Crawley was able to make the pass on Dave Eckel and hold off Dave Crawley, Jr. and Jim Leka (who was driving Roger Ater’s number 90) for his first checkered flag of 2007.
Decatur native Terry Babb returned to Macon Speedway and from the pole, he was able to notch his first win of the year in his Late Model heat as he held off Oreana’s Don Cisco III.
On this night of memories, one will stand out for Chatham’s Katie Lord. From the front row outside starting position, she was able to hold off Brian Cassell for her first-ever checkered flag at Macon Speedway.
Greg Kimmons already had a heat win to his credit going into the Sportsman feature and when the checkered flag was in the air for the finish, Greg Kimmons was in victory lane for his first feature win in 2007.
Kyle Logue started behind Al Crawley on the inside of the second row but when it was over, he had his second feature win of the season in the BARBECK Communications Modifieds. Racing with Jeff Leka, Al Crawley and Dave Crawley, Jr. throughout the 20 laps brought along a wonderful ovation from the packed house at Macon Speedway. Asked if he knew who was following him and how he’d have to race, he responded, “They are good, clean drivers. I knew I was in for a great race.” Logue passed Dave Crawley, Jr. for the top spot on lap six and never looked back.
Kyle Logue and Greg Kimmons had the front row for the Late Model feature. Both were feature winners in different divisions earlier in the night but it would once again be Kyle Logue coming out of the racecar with checkered flag in hand. For the third time in his career and the second time this season in back-to-back weeks, Logue had won the BARBECK Communications Modified feature and the Late Model feature. Leading all 20 laps was Logue, who finished in front of Kimmons, Mike Hammerlee and Don Cisco III.
Already a winner twice in the evening with Sportsman and Street Stock heat wins, Mike Pickering was looking for the checkered flag in the Street Stock feature. Pickering found victory lane after and exciting last lap finish. Pickering was followed by defending two-time Track Champion Larry Russell, Jr.
Jeremy Reed started on the pole in the number one spot and that’s how he finished. Not knowing he was going to race until later in the day, Reed came out onto the track and raced strong, weaving in and out of danger because of lapped traffic. Reed’s second-ever appearance in a feature turned out to be the one he’ll remember most as he finished ahead of Lance Johnson, Bruce Dulgar and Joe Reed.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and local Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.
