Mark Martin won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard with a lap of 49.436 seconds, 182.05 mph. At 50 years, 197 days, he becomes the oldest pole winner of a major event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"I like making history," said Martin describing his pole setting run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Martin was one of the first cars to qualify and he was concerned if his time would hold after everyone qualified.

"I was certainly disappointed with the driver of the car," said Martin who is his own toughest critic. "The track takes so long to get around, by the time I got to turn three I was scared."

But his time ended up being the fastest of the day. This is his 45th career pole and he moves into a tie for 10th with Buck Baker on the all-time poles list.

Juan Pablo Montoya finished in second and Dale Earnhardt Jr came in third.

Carl Edwards had a tough run, qualified 41st in the second to last row.

"We just have to work harder on our qualifying," said Edwards. "This is about the worst we've ever been, but maybe it's what we need right now to remind us that [qualifying] important too."
