Inside Line Promotions - GILLETTE, Wyo. (July 31, 2018) - Cody Masse scored his third top-10 finish of the year and second with the ASCS Frontier Region last Saturday to cap a long weekend that was nearly washed out because of rain.
Masse saw a 770-mile drive to Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., on Friday fall to rain while he waited at the track's pit gate.
"It was a long, expensive trip for us," he said. "Of course, as soon as they called it around 5:15, the rain stopped, the sun came out and it was a beautiful night.
"When we were deciding whether to run the full Frontier Region schedule earlier this year the two trips to Rapid City were kind of deterring us. But we decided to go ahead and run the full schedule."
The following evening at Gillette Thunder Speedway didn't look promising either.
"They had received rain during the week and also on Saturday at Gillette," he said. "But they worked hard to get the infield and track ready. They could have easily called it due to the rain they'd received. We really appreciate their effort to get the races in."
Masse drew the eighth starting position in his heat race.
"We drew pretty well early in the season, but now it seems to be evening out," he said. "I was able to get by a couple of cars early in the race and finished sixth. I couldn't do much more because the track was really heavy due to the rain."
Masse lined up 10[sup]th[/sup] in the feature.
"Even though there were six classes of cars, the track didn't go away one bit and remained wide open and fast," he said. "I got up to seventh and eventually finished eighth. I caught a couple of guys in front of me, but couldn't pass them because the track was narrow. But I was satisfied with our performance. It was just our second time at Gillette and we finished better than our first time."
The weekend was still a productive one in the point standings for Masse. He now sits tied for third in the ASCS Frontier Region championship standings and he leads the Rookie of the Year battle by 18 markers.
Masse is eager to race at a track closer to home this Friday when the ASCS Frontier Region visits Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont.
"We're excited to return to Gallatin Speedway," he said. "This will be our first time back there since we qualified for both main events at the Grizzly Nationals."
