Ripley, TN - May 05, 2009 - Sixty-eight year-old veteran Mid-South area Champion race engine-builder, Paul Newman of Ripley, Tennessee passed away Tuesday afternoon in the hospital. "Mr. Paul" as he was known, built Championship winning racing engines in the Mini Stock, Street Stock and Open Wheel Modified divisions over the past three decades for drivers who won races and additionally garnered race track and series Championships.

In addition to winning the 2008 Rislone USCS Modified Touring Series Championship with his 36 year-old son Ashley Newman at the wheel of the Paul Newman powered #73 open wheel modified, Mr. Paul's engine won track championships over the past three decades at least five speedways. Those track championships included titles at Caruthersville Speedway, Dyersburg Speedway, Memphis Motorsports Park, Milan Speedway and Riverside Speedway.
Mr. Newman also had the joy of having both of his sons Mark and Ashley drive his cars and be successful during his racing career.

I only remember meeting Mr. Paul once, as his bout with emphysema kept him away from the dust and dirt of the racing circuit" said USCS President, Pete Walton. "But, I talked to him several times on the phone over the 2008 season and afterwards when Ashley Newman was declared the Rislone USCS Modified Series 2008 champion. His pride and the joy in what his youngest son had accomplished was very evident. You only have to know Ashley to know what a great man his Father must have been. They are a great family and our prayers are with them at this time." concluded Walton.

Mr. Paul Newman is survived by his Wife Brenda, his sons Mark and Ashley and by his daughter Sharon. Mr. Newman also is survived by his nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren and grand-daughter Jennifer has one other great grandchild on the way. Details for the funeral services for Mr. Paul Newman will be announced as soon as available on Wednesday.
