Henderson, KY. (Sept. 8, 2006). The Pepsi MSCS Illinois Sprint Championship will take the green flag at Mt Vernon Raceway Saturday night Sept. 9th. The MSCS brand of “extreme” non-wing sprint cars will make a first visit ever to the Southern Illinois quarter mile facility promoted by Rick Heck.
The main event for the sprints will be a 30 lap feature paying $1,500 to win and $200 to start. Heat races are scheduled to begin at 7 o’clock. Drivers in the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series do not qualify but instead race their way into the feature through the heat races and a B-main. Mufflers are required at the track.
This event marks the first actual appearance in Illinois this season for the series. A third of the drivers registered with the organization make their home in Illinois. This includes two-time MSCS Champion and current points leader Alex Shanks who is from Marion. Fifteen year old Chris Windom is third in points. He calls Canton, IL, home. Rookie points leader Jeff Davis is from Pittsburgh, IL. Veteran Dale Christian races out of Rantoul, IL. These top 4 home state drivers and others are expected to be challenged by drivers from throughout the Midwest for the Illinois Sprint championship.
Twenty cars and a sole provisional representing the series will make up the starting field for the feature event. Last week’s race drew most of the top twenty drivers running with the series plus serious contenders for every available spot in the field. Kyle Cummins and Hud Cone from neighboring Indiana are both currently in the top five in points and looking for wins yet this season. Fans so far this season have watched drivers from 7 states compete for the honor of being the one that is somehow better than the best. Last week Daron Clayton of Sikeston, Mo, came home the winner for the third time this season.
At Mt. Vernon Raceway Saturday it will be a new race on strange clay. All teams will start with an even chance. There will be no hometown advantage and everyone will want to capitalize on the opportunity to turn laps at a neutral site. Hot laps begin at six. Don't’miss an exciting moment.
