FARMINGTON, Mo. -- (Sept. 18, 2003) Thirty-one-year-old Timmy Montgomery of Fredericktown is the Driver’s Seat’s “Driver of the Year” for 2003.
Montgomery has been driving sprint cars since 1991, but this has been one of this best seasons ever with eight feature wins coming at the St. Francois County Raceway alone. However his success did not end there this year as he also claimed the title at I-55 Raceway in Pevely during their M&M Night of Stars, and feature wins at Memphis, Tenn. and Jacksonville, Ill. His most impressive win occurred at St. Francois County as he dominated the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCOC) event.
Past winners of the award include Sam Thompson (1997), John Bohn (1998 & 1999), Mike Abney (2000), Brent Thompson (2001) and Mike Hammerle (2002).
Fourteen-year-old Jon Paul Reando of Festus is the Driver’s Seat’s “Rookie of the Year.” In just his first year in the seat of a full-bodied race vehicle, Reando made history at the Fredericktown Raceway for being the youngest driver ever to win a feature race. He finished fifth in points in the RAMS Mini Stock class at the Fredericktown Raceway and is one of the leaders in the RAMS Points Series.
Past winners of the award include Jay Landolt (2001) and Matt Eaton (2002).
Forty-eight-year-old Terry Flanagan of Fredericktown was selected as the first-ever Driver’s Seat’s “Promoter of the Year.” Flanagan took over the struggling Fredericktown Raceway in mid-season, made some changes and quickly turned the track around.
The award-winning Driver's Seat newspaper has been serving the racing community in Southeast Missouri since 1996 and is widely regarded as the region's finest racing publication. The official announcements of the awards will be published in the Sept. 23rd edition of the Driver's Seat, which will be the first-ever full-color edition of the newspaper.
