Haubstadt, IN - August 21, 2013. The Labor Day Weekend Challenge at Tri-State Speedway will consist of a double header racing program showcasing the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series and the UMP Open Wheel Modifieds. The race will be on Sunday Night September 1st in the tradition of past Labor Day Weekend events at the Haubstadt, Indiana, oval.

The MSCS Sprints will be competing in a 30 lap feature paying $3,000 to win and $200 to start. It is the first of four MSCS events scheduled at the track over the six week period that will close out the season for the track and for the series. Drivers who are especially good at the Haubstadt oval appear to have an edge heading into the final countdown this season.

Current MSCS Points leader Kevin Thomas Jr. has been turning laps at Tri-State Speedway since 2007 when he was a rookie. This season has been his best to date and he has been particularly effective at Haubstadt in winning 3 of the 4 MSCS features held at the track this season. The Cullman, AL, driver has led the points from opening night on into the season. That first win came at Haubstadt with USAC co-sanctioning the show! They will co-sanction another show with MSCS this season. That race is set for September 14th which is this year’s date for the Haubstadt Hustler.

Currently Chase Stockon of Elizabethtown, IN, is the runner-up in MSCS points. He has been working his way up through the ranks and has finished second in the feature at the last two MSCS events.

Defending Champion Jon Stanbrough is now third in points and has been as high as second this season in defending the championship. The last driver to win back to back championships was Kyle Cummins.

Actually, Cummins earned back- to back- to back titles in 2007, 2008, and 2009. He stands fourth on the season so far. Former Champion Brady Short is fifth.

The remainder of the Top Ten in MSCS points include rookie driver Bradley Sterrett, Robert Ballou, Chase Briscoe, Dakota Jackson, Hunter Schuerenberg, Daron Clayton, and Kurt Gross. Ballou won the last race held for the MSCS Sprints which was at Lincoln Park Speedway. That event drew 37 cars and drivers. However, anytime any number of these drivers get together there will be a race. It doesn’t matter if the amount of entries provide enough cars for three heats or four. Passing points are important and gaining positions takes an all out effort.

For the Labor Day Weekend Classic on Sunday, September 1st, racing will begin at 7:30. Hot laps are an hour earlier. Drivers draw at registration for starting positions in the heat races. Using the passing points system, the top 16 sprint car drivers will move directly into the feature lineup with the top six drivers redrawing.

Then the top four finishers in the B Main will be added to the feature lineup along with the first eligible driver from the provisional list to provide a 21 car starting field.
