(River Bend, MO) -- Developers of the proposed River Bend Raceway Park have been given the green light from the Village of River Bend Planning and Zoning Board.

The board voted unanimously with one member abstaining on Tuesday to grant a special use permit for the construction and operation of a 3/8-mile paved auto racing facility on the Northwest corner of Missouri Highways 291 and 210, just north of the Missouri river.

The projected 6.5 million dollar project is expected to open next Summer. "This is a big step that was accomplished here," said River Bend Raceway Park General Manager Scott Pennington. "We can now get to the fun stuff. We'll now move forward with the land surveys and getting the builders and contractors together. We have a strong group of business leaders in the community invlolved, including (former Chief's star) Tim Grunhard, so we're excited."

Plans show the track to be a semi-banked paved 3/8-mile tri-oval with the main grandstand on the west side, pits to the north, and paved parking to the south. Entrance to the facility will be off a frontage road from 210 Highway. Pennington and others close to the project say state-of-the-art amenities will make River Bend Raceway Park one of the nicest weekly tracks in the country.

Pennington says he can't predict when groundbreaking will take place, but hopes it will be as soon as possible. "There's all kinds of things that can delay construction that's out of our control, like weather. We'll just see how it goes."

Pennington is scheduled to be a guest on "Track Talk" this Saturday morning to discuss further the plans for the new track. Tune in at 8:00 a.m. on September 13 on Sports Radio 810 WHB.
