Commercial Dispatch Possum Town Grand Prix This Weekend!

Columbus, MS-The 6th Annual Commercial Dispatch Possum Town Grand Prix will be run this Thanksgiving weekend. The huge event is once again expected to draw around 250 race teams or more from across the southeast and beyond to the high banked 3/10’s mile clay oval infamously known as “The Baddest Bullring in the South.” The holiday weekend event has grown exponentially since its inception and with the addition of the Stormpay.com Late Model Series to the event will only get bigger and better.
Efforts have been made to manage time with the event thus an afternoon session has been added to make the event more fan and competitor friendly from a time management perspective. The local divisions such as Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Cruisers will compete in the afternoon sessions each day. Classes such as the Super Late Models, Stormpay.com Late Models, and Late Model Stocks will compete in the evening sessions. The Open Wheel Modified class will stage their heat races in the afternoon session on Friday and run their main event as part of the evening racing session on Saturday night. Johnny Stokes and the Columbus Speedway track prep crew will re-prepare the track between racing sessions with the goal of balancing time management and giving the best racing surface possible for the fans and teams.
There will also be an open practice session on Thanksgiving night from 7pm until 10pm. Fans should note that grandstand admission is free.
Fans and teams should also note that free camping is allowed on the Columbus Speedway grounds.
The multi main event weekend will see Super Late Models competing in main events both nights. The Super Late Models will have the Thanksgiving 30 on Friday night and then come back with a complete show in Saturday night with the Possum Town Grand Prix main event paying $5,000 to win plus bonuses for the 50-lap championship. Past Possum Town Grand Prix Champions include Wendell Wallace, Anthony Rushing, Mike Boland, and Clint Smith, with Kentucky’s Michael England as the defending Champion. As usual, many of the best drivers in the business are expected to be on hand competing for well over $7,000 possible to win in the Super Late Model class.
Another co-main event will be for the Stormpay.com National Late Model Touring Series. The series will compete in a 40-lap $3,000 to win main event presented by Hogchain Racing for the rapidly growing division that feature the use of GM Performance crate engines. Many of the top Crate Late Model drivers in the south will be on hand along with some high profile Super Late Model drivers doing double duty. The Stormpay.com cars will have time trials and heat races Friday night and have their Lightning Dash and 40-lap main event on Saturday Night.
Yet another co-main event will be the $2,000 to win PTGP Modified Championship presented by William Wells Auto. The PTGP always draws a stout field of Open Wheel Modified pilots from across the Mid-South and this year should be no different. The Open Wheel racers will have qualifying heats on Friday afternoon, B-Mains Saturday afternoon, and their main event Saturday evening.
The 2-Person Cruiser World Championship paying $1,500 to win presented by WJEC-FM and WVSA-AM in Vernon, Alabama will be held for the 6th year and is expected to provide a no holds barred brand of racing in their biggest paying event of the season for the tandem team cars. These cars feature the driver with control of the steering wheel and brake while the passenger has control of the gas pedal in the long wheel base racers. Cruisers will compete in the afternoon sessions both days.
The Late Model Stock class will compete for $1,000 to win in the 20-lap main event. The Late Model Stocks will qualify in Friday night and run their main event on Saturday night.
The Street Stocks and Mini Stocks with have their traditional PTGP Championships. Both classes will run their heat races Friday afternoon and Feature events Saturday afternoon. Street Stocks will compete for $600 to win and Mini Stocks for $500 to win.
Admission prices for the weekend are as follows:
Thursday night: Grandstands-Free. Pit Passes-$15.
Friday: Grandstands Adults-$15 with children 10 and under admitted free. Pit passes are $25.
Saturday: Grandstand-Adults $20 with children 10 and under admitted free. Pit passes are $30.
Afternoon sessions start around 3:30pm on Friday and 2:30pm on Saturday. Evening session start at 7pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday.
Lawn chairs and coolers are welcome.
Fans and teams should bring head sets and radios as the track PA broadcast can also be heard on FM 88.5.
