Pro Crate chip rule !!

How many Pro Crate teams would like to see the Ignition Chip rule put in place by UMP and local tracks? I personally thinks its a GOOD idea ...but would need to be set up and policed. I think it would help the teams who do not send the motors out and built to the gray areas of the rules. 6800 rpm to 6900 rpm would that be a good range? Anything that is this easy for a track to supply or tech would be a good start. After 2 years of racing Crate Class and hearing about all the cheating, but seeing no one caught. Why not try to help level the playing field. Some engines sound and look so much stronger on the track than others. I know CARBS and EXHUAST !!! Just wanting to get a feel for other teams thoughts on this ...if enough like the idea maybe UMP and local tracks will listen and try it......Thanks jcup

Personally...id say 5900 to 6000. That according to the GM website is max rpm versus torque. Ive sat there and listened to some of the guys running. From a mechanic's ear stand point...alot of the guys are turning them over that. And...if you turn it over the max rpm point you must have a reason to. Or you just dont know any better. Sounds cool but isnt doing much other than wearing motor parts prematurely. Id like to see a spec carb as well....but those are easy to mess with anyway. Chip rule would be a great idea. And save the racers motors.

Cup, I have read of other sanctions that have a chip rule. The article was for a asphalt track with only one class of cars racing. I think the chip rule would make for a more competitive race in a crate class. The thing about putting chips in cars, it would require more tech people to put them in and check them after the race. Another thing to think about is when do you tech the box to make shure it even works. The article I read, it kind of made scence, said the car could only have one MSD box, and to check it the tech official would put a 3000 chip in the box to make shure it worked before the race. I have said for a long time we could still have good racing even with the chip rule.

I think with a little work the chip could be changed during the race and they wouldnt even no. So something needs to be done on this issue. Jmo... but im dirtboy so what do i know!!!

is it a rule that only certain people are allowed to build or refreshen these engines??? i would think that if your a certified ase tech nician you should be allowed to refreshen your own crate engine.
the bolts are still available at many places .. why should you have to pay someone to refreshen the engine when they are doing the same thing you could do ... whats your opinions on this . how do we know they aint switching the cam out in these engines??? thats all it would take for a edge on another competitor????

thought these engines where sold with a hei dist. from gm comes in the engine when purchased
why would we run msd when gm put that dist. in these motors to keep everyone the same ???

why would they allow msd components?? thats not original crate motor equipment???

There is a distributor that can be dropped in and be connected to a lap top computer that will read the cam shaft and compare it to the factory one! I'm sure they will have one!

UMP has not required sealing bolts since mid 2009 (although their rules still say they do) so you can rebuild your own engine if you like.

The GM 604 does not come with any distributor so some have chosen MSD and others HEI......depends on your preference.

msd box would have to be out of reach from the driver. which would have to be included in the rules. And only one set of wiring. there are ways around the chip a driver can do with the wiring, so the wiring would have to be visible for inspections by tech.
this could be checked after feature by the tech. pull the required chip replace it with a 2000 ro 3000 chip to see if rev limiter works. if it dont than the box has been wired around the chip.

don hoener what website can i veiw this distributor at?? that plugs in a lap top? sounds interesting i would like to see it .....

I guess I should have explained how the chips are put in the MSD box in my other post. Unlike a transponder that the driver puts in his car, the chip would be put in the MSD box by the tech official. Once the chip is in the box a small plastic or aluminum cover with a hole for a wire seal or wire tie is secured around the MSD box. If the wire seal has been tamperd with you are DQ'd. My only objection is the extra manpower it will take to put the chips in and remove them from the cars, and we all know the more people the promoters have to pay the smaller the purse will be.

Aint there something else they could do besides the chip? Just look at weber at tri city,he was overhauling them guy's. I was around some of his people and they had some tricks done to the motor. Its funny how people talk when they get a few beers in them lol..

There are other ways a motor can be restricted. 2 barrel carb, restrictor plates, I'm shure there are other bolt on restrictors. They could also think of a gear rule, then tech the top 3 in the feature. I think the crate class is going in the opposite direction they were intended for. It's not a "crate" motor anymore, you can have your "crate" motor bluprinted, dynoed to find the best carb/header combo. The days of take your motor out of the "crate" put it in you car, and race it are over. Go back to the true crate motor, put a carb & header rule on the cars, maybe even a harder tire rule and you may have a class where it's affordable again. THEN we will see who hits the set-up right, and who CAN drive a racecar.

Dirtboy it's funny when people are bsing and say something to make a moron like u to flap your gums when they are actually following the rules and being totally legal. I can say I got a 460 in a sportsmen but does it really mean I do?
