Quincy Raceways got the 2009 season off to a great start even with the less than desirable temperatures and weather as Mark Burgtorf, Michael Long, Jeff Mueller and James Leffew took the first feature wins of the year.

The Budweiser IMCA Late Model main event was one for the history books as a three way battle for the lead was waged for more than the first twenty laps of the 30 lapper. Jerry Weisenberger and Mark Burgtorf drew the front row starting spots with Jason Frankel and Nick Ingalls in the second row. Burgtorf and “The Hippy” Weisenberger raced side by side for with Burgtorf being scored in the lead for the first eight laps but Weisenberger managed to get the advantage for the ninth lap through lap sixteen. Meanwhile, Jason Frankel made a charge past Burgtorf for second on lap fourteen and then into the lead on lap seventeen as the three veteran drivers raced within inches of one another while trading the first three spots every lap. Burgtorf got the advantage he needed on the twenty third circuit as Frankel slipped up in the first turn. Burgtorf then held off Frankel over the remaining laps to take feature event win followed by Frankel in second, Nick Ingalls in third, Weisenberger in fourth and Justin Reed in fifth. Lonnie Bailey and Sam Halstead were the heat race winners while Joey Gower grabbed the hardware in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.

Michael Long served notice that he was going to be the driver to beat again in the for 2009 season in the newly sanctioned Miller Lite UMP Modified division. CJ Ostrander led the first circuit as he jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag but Donovan Lodge took the lead away for the second and third laps as three caution flags slowed the action during those laps. Long charged from his third row starting spot into the lead for the fourth lap and survived the rest of the time limited event to score his first victory of the year. Wyatt Lance took the second spot after battling Long and Lodge over the final laps. Tony Dunker scored third followed by Robbie Reed in fourth and Justin Reed in fifth. Lodge, Dunker and Lance were the heat race winners with Long taking the win in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash.

Jeff Mueller and Chris Wibbell put on a great race in the Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Car main event. Mueller led the final sixteen circuits of the twenty lap main event but had to hold off Kevin Tomlinson for eight laps then Wibbell joined in the fray on the lap sixteen. Muller had his hands full trying to keep Wibbell at bay over the final laps but managed to take the win as the checkered flag fell on lap twenty. Wibbell settled for second followed by Tomlinson in third, Steve Steinkuhler in fourth and Abe Huls in fifth. Doug Huls and Tomlinson were the heat race winners.

Rookie Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock driver, Adam Scott served notice that he was going to be a contender in his first season but it was another young gun, James Leffew who took home the feature event win. Leffew held off Scott for most of the twenty lap feature event but Scott settled for second followed by Wes Mayfield in third, Jake Powers in fourth and Corrie Eifert in fifth. Steve Carlin and Scott were the heat race winners.

Coming up next at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, April 19 is one of the biggest events of the season with the first appearance of the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models for the 2009 season.
