"RGR's Win Streak Reaches 17 With Another Weekend Sweep"
(April 18, 2005) - - Riding high off of 8 straight victories from the previous weekend, Rusty Griffaw Racing team returned to the Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, IL, on April 15th, for the $1,000-to-win UMP Modified race. The nice payout was met with great competition as 30 Modifieds entered into the night's events. First order of business for the evening was qualifying. Rusty turned a quality lap around the 1/4 mile track with the sixth fastest time of 14.503 seconds. This earned him an outside the front row starting spot in the 2nd heat race. At the drop of the green flag, Rusty powered his way to the front and drove off with a victory. Again starting outside the front row for the dash, Rusty led every lap and took the victory over the #41m of Brent Mullins. As feature time rolled around, the fast line looked to be towards the middle or bottom of the track, and with the dash victory, Rusty was scheduled to start pole for the main event. On his way to a fourth straight feature win, Rusty went to the bottom groove and took the lead into turn #1. Caution flew on lap 5 as Mullins was mounting strong runs through the middle of the racing surface. On the restart, a great battle insued for second spot as the #22 of Matt Mevert took the spot from Mullins. Caution flew once again on lap 11 with the running order: Griffaw, Mevert, Mullins, and Chad Kinder. The final 9 laps proved to anything but easy as each of those drivers mounted runs as Rusty pulled them to the finish. With Friday's sweep, the wn streak had reached 11.

Looking for alittle change in scenary, RGR ventured to Ken Schrader and Ray Marlar's track, I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO, on Saturday, April the 16th. The 3/8th mile track, which normally draws a large modified field, brought in 28 tough entries for evening. Rusty began the night by starting 3rd in the second heat race. Rusty dove underneath the front row and led the pack coming out of turn #2 on the first lap. He utilized the high-side of the track for his 7th heat race victory of the year. Rusty earned the second starting spot for the 8 lap dash event which determines the starting spots for the first 4 rows of the feature. He continued his winning ways by claiming victory over multiple time track champion, #4j drivin by Scott Weber. Those two were slated to start the 20 lap feature event from the front row. Each driver wanted to win the race into turn #1 and gain momentum on the high groove. The first start saw Weber take the initial lead, but a caution regrouped the field for another complete restart. The 2nd start saw a different result as Rusty was able to gain advantage into turn #1, but again the yellow flew and the field was reracked. The third and final start saw Rusty again take the lead into turn #1. The #16 and #4j checked out from the field as they battled lap after lap on the high-side. On the start of lap 17, Rusty bobbled just a bit and Weber took his chance for the lead as he tried a famous "Pevely slidejob" down into turns 1 & 2. Weber cleared Rusty but was unable to keep his car from tagging the wall and subsequently ending up on his side after extra contact from #21 of Dennis Richards. Both drivers were "ok" after the incident. The final 4 laps saw Rusty besting the 2004 Track Champion, #89 of Bobby Bittle. Rusty completed his 5th straight sweep and compiled 14 consecutive checkered flags.

On Sunday night, April 17th, RGR traveled to Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL. Looking to complete their second weekend sweep, RGR were faced with a large number of UMP Modifieds. As 38 cars packed the pit area, the #16 Impressive Race Car had to roll off in the 8th starting spot in the first heat race of the afternoon. Rusty found a hole in the pack of cars after the green flag and drove hard though turns 1 and 2 to take the 2nd spot after just the first lap. At the completion of the 2nd lap, Rusty had taken the lead from the #51 of Stanton. He held on for his 15th consecutive checkered flag. The heat race victory earned Rusty the pole for the dash event. He navigated the bottom groove to win his 5th dash event of the year over the #11 of Kyle Byerline. Seventeen wins in a row awaited RGR with another feature win. The Festus, Missouri, driver took the green and again piloted the bottom groove to a commanding feature win as the event was plaqued by many cautions and ended under green-white-checkered conditions after just 18 laps.
