The forecast of rain didn't slow the drivers at Clarksville Speedway, where Randle Sweeney set fast times in two classes and Mini Modified racers prepared for championships. Randle drove the Burr Late Model #33 around the clay oval in 13.100 seconds with Brian Maynard (18), from Benton, Kentucky right behind with a 13.328 fast lap. Sweeney set 14.299 as the fast time in Open Wheel #182 with Clayton Miller (X15) putting 14.689 seconds on the clock behind Randle. Matt Potter qualified Pro Street #64 in 15.254 seconds to top that class and get racing underway.
Pure Mini Stock drivers agreed to run their feature race from the pill draw leaving Street Stock heats to open the show. "Johnboy" Smith (28) and "Buster" Smith (38) both found themselves starting in the front row of the first Street Stock heat, with Buster leading for the first couple laps, Johnboy snuck past him to cross the checkered ahead of a steadily gaining field. In the second Street Stock heat, Dale Phillips (87) started on the pole and ran away with the win to lock down a front row spot in the feature.
It would be Clayton Miller (X15) getting the edge in the Open Wheel dash with Sweeney (182) never giving him more than a car length to spare, Miller would take the pole for the feature with his win. With late Open Wheel entries coming in the pit gate, a large heat race was set with ten cars and a few mechanical failures. Front row starters Scott Boley (16) persisted to the finish and Lucas Lee (12) settling in second. Michael Dial (Z2) took over the lead in the first Mini Modified heat with Charles Newberry (23) sticking to his rear bumper. Dial took the win. Ronnie Richardson (15) had the luck of the draw with the pole position in the second Mini heat.
Richardson put plenty of distance between himself and the rest of the field for the front row, next to Dial in the feature. Brian Maynard (18) flew across the finish line in the Late Model dash with Tony Albright (1) and Gary Frost (F14) in tow. Randle Sweeney pulled along side Gary a couple times in the last laps but had to take the fourth spot. In the first Late Model heat, David Miller (K1) would start on the pole with Wendell Bratton
(24) on the outside. Bratton would get the edge off the start and Steven Ashby (16) would slip past Miller to grab the second spot. A late arriving Rodney Melvin (27) would turn the second Late Model heat upside down, starting from the last row and moving all the way to the front leaving Carnell Parker (75) and Joseph Lingauer (28) battling for second. The Pro Street dash had Matt Potter (64) and Brian Caudle (RC1) on the front row at the start. Potter would hold on as Caudle would slip to Don Young (41) in the 'Warhorse'. Bernd Kollmann (35) started the Pro Street heat next to Skip Wilson (13) in the front row. Wilson would lead the race up to the half way before suffering mechanical failure, leaving Kollmann to take the glory and finish up the heats for the night.
Voted most popular in a recent poll of Speedway fans, Ronnie Richardson
(15) led the Mini Modified feature race across the finish line to take the championship trophy. Dale McCord (31) had the fun of keeping Ronnie on his toes up to the half way point where Ronnie began pulling away into the lap traffic. A good, clean race crowned Richardson tops for the season. Modified Minis were followed by the Pure Mini Stock racers. Christopher Perrigo (12), voted favorite in this class, also took the trophy ahead of Timothy Hunter (77). Hunter led the little feature for most the race and Perrigo got past with just three laps left. Sweeney (182) and Miller (X15) would spend most of the Open Wheel feature race side-by-side, at the front, despite a caution at the crossed flags. Michael Lee (55) would try the same with Gil Smith
(7X) for the third spot but A spin through the infield with #182 left Smith the second place behind Miller's win. Pro Street feature race action Matt Potter (64) moving through lap traffic with Don Young (41) in pursuit right up to the finish. A much anticipated Late Model feature took to the track after the Pro Street. The drop of the green flag had Tony Albright (1) with the edge over Brian Maynard (18) but a caution brought them back to a restart. The second time around, Maynard wouldn't give in so easy sticking to Albright on the outside for a couple laps until a tangle in turn two slowed the pace again. With mechanical failure causing Gary Frost (F14) to leave the track, Sweeney (33) had a solid third place spot as another yellow flag slowed the race. Sweeney would keep sights set on Maynard, and second place, as Albright led the field into lap traffic with a spectacular finish for the win. First to run heats and last in features, the Street Stock racers started with a comfortable field and cars fell with mechanical failure. Dale Phillips (87) wasn't immune to the nature of machines after leading past the half way point only to have Dorris McCord (45) take over from there. Don Everett (9) hung in behind McCord for the second place spot with Timmy Wilson (29) for the show. All of these Street Stock racers have work cut out for them to prepare for their Season Championship next Saturday night.
