IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (March 9) – IMCA’s Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod division has found its first weekly home in Idaho.

Idaho Falls Raceway will add the class to regular Friday night race cards already headed by sanctioned Modifieds.

“A handful of guys here decided they wanted to do something other than race street stocks or pure stocks, and they wanted rules that would let them run at other tracks,” explained promoter Trevor Arnold. “I know of seven cars now that are being bought or rebuilt. I think this class is going to be big around here. It’s really going to take off.”

Southern SportMods are on the season opening program EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour program May 14-15. Point races at the 3/8-mile Idaho Falls clay oval are scheduled through Sept. 24.

“The economics of the SportMods is really good when compared to some of the local classes and the standardized rule package is important,” Arnold said. “Drivers can race here for state and national points, as well as track points. We’re hoping to get some of the drivers from Utah to come over during the Wild West Tour.”
