Inside Line Promotions - COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 27, 2014) - Despite a rough start, Trey Starks put together a solid weekend with the ASCS Northwest Region during an Oregon tripleheader.
"It had its ups and downs," he said. "I didn't draw better than a 35 all weekend."
Starks started in the third row of his heat race each night, beginning last Friday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon. However, he was able to maneuver from sixth to fourth place, which earned him enough points to start 11[sup]th[/sup] in the main event.
"I believe we were up to fifth or sixth and then there was a road block," he said. "It was one of those deals where you had nowhere to go. Unfortunately it ended our night. I think we were going to have a decent run."
Starks was credited with a 15[sup]th[/sup]-place finish in the feature after being caught up in a crash in turns three and four around the midpoint of the race.
The team ventured to Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday for the first of two nights of action at the quarter-mile track.
"We didn't have a very good heat at all," said Starks, who finished where he started - fifth. "We had stuff a little more figured out in the B Main."
Starks led the distance to win the B Main and transfer to the main event, which he started 17[sup]th[/sup].
"Going into the main it seemed like the track was good, but we just couldn't find anything," he said. "We had to stick to the bottom because our car wasn't very good on the top.
Battling a loose race car, Starks stayed on the inside line throughout the main event and he rallied for a 10[sup]th[/sup]-place result.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Cottage Grove Speedway with Starks charging from sixth to second place in his heat race, which earned him the most points of any driver in heat race action and a trip to the feature redraw.
Unfortunately, Starks pulled the second-highest number - seven - to start the 30-lap feature on the inside of the fourth row.
"We had a couple of incidents where I'd get by a guy and the caution would come out," he said. "We were battling at the end with a bunch of lapped cars."
Starks competed for a top five throughout the feature before driving into fourth place exiting turn two on the final lap.
"That was a good position to pick up, just kind of a boost at the end," he said. "We had a good working car. It was really fun."
It marked his third top five of the season.
Starks will take this weekend off before competing at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., on June 7.
