BATESVILLE SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE
Starr inks Alltel as Title Sponsor for Major Modified event
May 3-8; 2004

By Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

BATESVILLE AR. In March, Mooney Starr, owner and promoter of the Batesville Speedway, unveiled plans to hold the biggest race in the history of the Modified class of cars. This popular class of cars sprang from Iowa two decades ago, but has since spread across the United States, and is considered to be the biggest class of cars in auto racing.

What was shocking about the announcement, was that Starr planned to pay the winner of the race $100,000. Few details were available at that time, but now Starr has released the dates for the race, plus a major corporate title sponsor for the event.

The weeklong event will be held on May 3 through 8 in 2004. Alltel Corporation has signed on as the title sponsor for the race, which will be called the Alltel 100.

"We're very excited about signing a company such as Alltel," commented Starr. "Not only is this going to be the largest event in the history of Modified racing, but we have the privilege of being associated with a major corporation such as Alltel.

Alltel has a major stake in the sport of auto racing, and sponsors Roger Penske Racing's Dodge, driven by Ryan Newman. Alltel is an Arkansas based company, but has 12 million wireless, local telephone, long distance, Internet, and high-speed data service customers in 26 states.

Thirty of the nations most elite Modified cars will vie for the $100,000 top prize, and each of the 30 starters of the race will be guaranteed a minimum of $1,500 to start the event. Starr has devised a unique method of qualifying for the event.

On Monday, May 3, there will be an open practice night at the speedway, to familiarize the drivers with the Batesville Speedway. On Tuesday, May 4, all cars will time in. The purpose of these time trials will be to guarantee the four fastest cars from time trials a spot in Saturday's Main Event.

On the next three nights, there will be a round of qualifying each night. Pill draw will determine the starting order on the 15 nightly heat events. The winner of each heat will go into the nights qualifying feature. Fifteen more cars will be added to the qualifying feature through a B Feature event. Thirty cars will start the night's qualifying feature, with the top seven transferring to the Alltel 100.

Provisional starters will be added to the field on Saturday. Guaranteed a spot in the race will be the winner of this fall's Dirt Works Race Cars World Modified Championship. Another guaranteed spot would go to next spring's TCI Automotive Mid-America Modified Championship.

Information concerning the Alltel 100 will be available on the track's Website. The address is http://www.batesvillespeedway.com. Drivers will be able to start entering this event soon, watch for that announcement as soon as it becomes available. Starr has indicated he will limit entries to 400 teams, so get your entries in early.
