Steve Carlson won the Gateway 100 ASA Late Model Series race at Gateway International Raceway.
Carlson took victory after passing Brian Campbell on the very last lap of the race.
Josh Hammer, known as the Southern Hammer because of his Alabama roots, led 60 of the 80 laps before suffering mechanical trouble and falling out of the lead.
Campbell inherited the lead but could not hold off the fast charging Carlson who passed him in turns three and four.
“I really like it here [Gateway],” said Carlson. “I really had a lot fun.”
The veteran driver, Carlson had to be happy to hold off some of the young guns in this series who are aiming to be future NASCAR stars.
“Those young guys car drive,” said Carlson in victory circle.
For one race, the young racers got a lesson from a seasoned pro.
