CLARKSVILLE, TN – StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series officials have announced that two Columbus, MS dirt tracks have joined the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series for the 2006 season. Johnny Stokes-promoted Columbus Speedway and Magnolia Speedway will both feature a Crate Late Model Division under the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series banner.

Columbus Speedway, on the east side of town, will run on most Saturday nights, but will take a few nights off during the season to make room for the action to move to the west side of town at Magnolia Speedway. Stokes and his staff are still working to finalize plans and the 2006 schedule for both tracks.

The StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series features economical engines produced by GM Performance and sealed at factory. The StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series gives weekly short track competitors an opportunity to compete against drivers at other weekly tracks on a regional and national basis.

The steel-head “602” engine sells for $2,800, and the aluminum-head “604” engine sells for $4,800. Race cars using the 602 engine weigh 2,200 pounds, and get a 150 pound weight break over the race cars using the 604 engine that must weigh 2,350 pounds. These engines are race-ready right out of the crate from the factory.

The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will visit Columbus Speedway, known as “The Baddest Bullring In The South,” on January 21 with a $2,000-to-win 40-lap main event as a part of the 6th Annual Winter Classic.

“As both a driver and a promoter, Johnny Stokes fully understands the economic balance on both sides of the fence the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series brings to both Columbus Speedway and Magnolia Speedway,” StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series Director Mike Vaughn said. “We’re looking forward to bringing the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour to Columbus Speedway on January 21, and working with both tracks this season with the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series.”

Columbus Speedway and Magnolia Speedway Promoter Johnny Stokes sees crate engine late models as the future of the sport.

“It makes too much sense not to sign up for the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series because this is just what dirt late model racing needs,” Stokes said. “Economical engines worked for the open-wheel modified class, and I know it will also work for late models. This division weekly at Columbus Speedway, and for our special events at Magnolia Speedway, will encourage drivers to move up to late model competition.”

Columbus Speedway will host a Practice Day on Friday, January 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday, January 21, the pit gate opens at 9 a.m., with the drivers meeting at 12:30 p.m., and racing is scheduled for 2 p.m. For more information contact Columbus Speedway at 662-574-2572, or visit the track web site at www.columbusspeedway.net.
