Sunoco & Simons Petroleum Firecracker Weekend Sets Record Numbers At West Plains

Weather conditions weren't perfect but they were tolerable and all three nights of competition went into the record books as scheduled. Over the three night event 243 competitors representing seven states, scored an effort to gain a share of the $30,000 plus purse at the Super Stock, Hobby Stock and Cruiser class special event.

Big winner of the 5th Annual Sunoco & Simons Petroleum sponsored event was Kevin Salter of Batesville, AR. Salter claimed the $5,000 Super Stock feature money after winning his heat and the nightly qualifier during Round 1 in Thursday night competition. Although he started on the pole in the main event there were three lead changes during the 45-lap race.

Finishing second was Bruce Busch of Mena, AR, followed by Tony Anglin of Walnut Ridge, AR, Derald Kelly of Birch Tree, MO, Andy Milliken of Greenwood, AR, Tommy Porter of Ola, AR, Richie Tosh of Batesville, AR, Ted Elam of Des Arc, AR, Buddy Parks of Marshall, AR, and Claudie Cook of Portageville, AR.

The remainder of the Super Stock main event field is as follows: Jesse Brotherton, Walt Butler, Heath Davenport, Steve Burton, Ronny Williams, Tim Brown, Sean Williams, Stan Lewis, Stan Ellison, Scooter Floyd, Chris Moser, John Hughes, Kevin Collins and Robby Arnold.

Taking the $500 top money in the Hobby Stock feature was Rick Buie of Batesville, AR. Finishing second was Tyson Troutman of Houston, MO, followed by Toby Goodwin of Ash Flat, AR, Bobby Bryant of West Plains and Rick Cooper of Thornfield, MO

The remainder of the Hobby feature field in order of the finish is: Robert Duvall, Chuck Russell, Joe Payne, Greg Lute, Dexter Frost, Tim Prine, James Mayfield, Hunter Duren, Willy Walker, Keith Cain, and Allen Hatch.

In the Cruiser main event the winner was Jeff North of Willow Springs, MO, who pocketed the $500 top money. Rounding out the top five were Bill Johns of Hardy, AR, Jason Johnson of Hardy, AR, Jody Jones of Raymondville, MO, and Chris Skinner of South Fork, MO.

The balance of the feature field included: Bill Harden, Steve McChristian, Shane Hitt, Mike Butler, Dale Chaney, Donald Collins, Michael Lewis, David Collins, Jason Lohner, Kevin Collins, and Nick Ellison.

In support class action on Friday night the Front Wheel Drive feature winner was Patrick Reed of Mtn. View, MO, followed by Rance Rathbone of Birch Tree, MO, Brad Sanders of West Plains, MO, David Elms of Paragould, AR, and Truman Poole of West Plains.

Rounding out the feature field was Rodney Ely, David Lute, Robert Jamison, Stanton Smyth, Davey Chaney, Chris Johnson, and Jerry Doane.

The Youth Hobby Stock feature winner was Ben Ledgerwood of Birch Tree, MO, followed by Bobby Skinner of Moody, MO, Chris Ratterree of Mtn. Grove, MO, Eric Butler of Moody, MO and Nikita Curtner of West Plains.

Shawn Walsh of Ash Flat, AR, made his first appearance on Victory Lane this season when he won the IMCA Modified feature event. Rounding out the top 10 were Kevin Salter of Batesville, AR, Dusty Johnston of Flippin, AR, Jamel Korkis of Cave City, AR, John Mostrom of Flippin, AR, Dicky Jackson of Paragould, AR, Bill Adams of West Plains, Jeremy Russell of Jonesboro, AR, Kevin Collins of West Plains and Fred Scarbrough of Koshkonong, MO.

The remainder of the field as they finished included: Mike Phillips, Billy Romans, Scott Crigler, Bryan McKee, Rustin Miller, Brian Judd, Troy Tredway, Marty Toten, Lonnie Judd, Jerry Croney, Carmon Vincent, Don Marsh, Danny Peterson, Mike Mayfield, Richard Eagan.

The Air Magic fireworks program provided another extraordinary display of the creative talents and professional ability of director/owners Rick and Nancy Weaver of Batesville, AR. With record numbers in attendance the cheers and applause indicated the overwhelming approval.

Throughout the evening in addition to the "Salute to Our Troops", veterans of recent military action were honored with public recognition and t-shirt presentations by track announcer, Tom Harris.

There will be no racing at West Plains Motor Speedway on July 10. This date was confirmed as being the Heart of the Ozarks annual fair week observance when original scheduling was made.

Weekly racing will resume on July 17 when Car-Quest and Tri-County Auto Parts will sponsor the full points program. All classes will be running, including IMCA Modified, Super Stock, Hobby Stock, Cruiser, Front Wheel Drive and Youth Hobby Stock.

On July 17, gates will open for the weekly autograph session at 6 p.m., hotlaps begin at 7:30 p.m., with racing at 8 p.m. Adult admission will be $7, senior citizens $4, kids 7-11 $2 and those 6 and under are always free at West Plains Motor Speedway.
