Tales of the "old days"

I'm an old timer who went with my dad who was a Mopar mechanic back in the mid-late 50's & early 60's. Then was gone for over 40 years. The first time we saw Dandy Don do his time trials @BC, I can remember my dad cussing that damn Ford is real trouble. Was he ever right. Back then everybody ran time trials. Then coming back after being gone, about 5 years ago on a rainy night @ BC, a dash between The Hammerman on the low & #50 on the high, door to door for the whole dash. Sat near finish line & couldn't tell who won & wasn't only one TTG announced the Hammerman won, but they gave the checkered flag to Dixon & been hooked since.

been thinking about the old days. Back when i was in high school (late 70's) my friends dad bought Bill Faust's championship car and started racing. i remember stopping at the local store to pick up sponsorship yep beer for after the races. I remember standing in the infield during hot laps with the wedge wrench in hand ready to make adjustments before qualifying. I remember when i got to pack the track for the first time wow! And buying used tires from Walter Kunz thinking we really had something now. We never did win any features but won a few semi's and when we made the feature without running the semi we really celabrated.

Started going with Dad and his pal when I was about 5 or 6. It all definitely got into my blood early.. every Saturday nite at Highland it seemed. I still have all my programs from early to mid 80's. Bill, Bob, Ken, Mark Faust, Curt Allen, Dennis Sellers, Terry & Todd Issack, Chris Bargetzi.. Marty Sr., Tom Goodall, I still remember alot of drivers Guess who was my favorite though..? My first memory dates back to about 1976 or 77 when I sat in Kevin Goss' Triple Nickel at the gas station at the end of the road. That was right next to Godfrey Speedway. I was HOOKED! I remember one night about '86 when there was a big fuss between John Seers and Kenny Edwards. The Seets' wound up raccing the rest of the year at Tri City. Both were Saturday night tracks then.
