Is a Powerglide considered a "direct drive" transmission?

What makes a transmission a "direct drive"?

direct drive

A stock powerglide is not a direct drive, but on that has been modified to run without a torque converter would be considered a direct drive. A direct drive transmission would be one that has no working clutch or torque converter connecting it to the flywheel or crankshaft. Basicly locks the crankshaft to the input shaft of the transmission with no way of disconnecting it. Hope this helps.
