EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Speedway Park will sanction both the USRA RHS Modifieds and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods as part of their weekly Friday night show during the 2011 racing season.
Drivers in the USRA RHS Modified division will compete for a points fund worth $1,500 at season’s end to the track champion and a $10,000 top prize awaiting the division’s national champion in the USRA Weekly Racing Series.
Competitors in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will be chasing a $500 top prize for winning the track title and $2,000 for the top points earner nationally. The class will compete under the current Limited X-Mod track rules for the 2011 season.
In 1979, the doors were opened for the first time at the El Paso Speedway Park. The facility flourished for nearly two decades, but fell on hard times during the late 1990s and closed its doors.
The speedplant got a second chance at life, however, when it was purchased by Royal Jones, Jimmy Ray and Sherman Barnett in 2000.
After several years of rebuilding its reputation, the El Paso Speedway Park has again become one of the premier dirt tracks in the Lone Star State, hosting an average of 1,000 fans each weekend.
In addition to sharing the responsibilities at ESPS, Jones and Ray are also co-owners of Mesilla Valley Transportation – one of the largest locally-owned transportation providers in Western Texas and Southern New Mexico – and jointly own the Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces, N.M., which also joined the United States Racing Association family this week.
The marriage gives local and regional racers the opportunity to race both Friday and Saturday night, increasing the odds that one of the next USRA Weekly Racing Series national champs hails from the southern half of America.
With a 26-show regular season that alternates between Winged Sprint Cars, USRA RHS Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Late Models, Legends Cars, USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods (Limited X-Mods), Super Trucks and Hornets, the El Paso Speedway Park has something for everybody every Friday night, April through August.
The regular season gets underway on Friday, April 29, for the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods while the USRA RHS Modifieds make their debut one week later. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7:45.
The track’s annual awards banquet will be held Jan. 22, 2011, at the Las Cruces (N.M.) Convention Center in conjunction with competitors from the Southern New Mexico Speedway.
The El Paso Speedway Park is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval featuring three degrees of banking and located 6.5 miles east of Loop 375, then right on KRAG, then take the first right. For more information call 915-791-8749 or log onto www.epspeedwaypark.com.
The USRA was founded in 2002 with the sanctioning of Modifieds and Stock Cars at the Thunder Valley Speedway in Fayetteville, Ark. Hobby Stocks were added in 2003 and the organization grew steadily over the next three years with 14 tracks hosting USRA events in 2005. The B-Mod division arrived on the scene in 2006 and since then, USRA Weekly Racing Series national champions have been crowned in all four premier divisions.
