West Plains, Missouri (5/27/07) – Wendell Wallace has had a monkey on his back for most of the 2007 season, but on Saturday night at West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri, Wallace caged the monkey, and picked up the $41,000 winner’s check in the 15th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100.

Seventy-Six Super Late Model converged on West Plains Motor Speedway for the running of the 15th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100. However, a fast, heavy race track in practice on Thursday night would end the weekend of three of the competitors with Freddy Smith and Tony Anglin each losing their only motors, and Josh Richards taking a horrific flip early in the practice session. All three drivers would be done for the weekend. As a result, seventy-three competitors took to time trials on Friday night with Mooresburg, Tennessee driver, Scott Bloomquist, earning the Young Oil Corporation Top Qualifier honors with a lap of 14.178 seconds around the 3/8 mile, red clay oval in his #0 Bloomquist/Vic Hill Racing Engine entry. Bloomquist was less than 0.2 seconds off the track record of 14.000, which is held by Billy Moyer.

Clint Smith from Senoia, Georgia and Wallace earned the front row for the 100 lap affair. At the drop of the green flag, Wallace immediately set sail with Smith, Jimmy Owens, & Brady Smith in tow. Throughout the early stages of the race, competitors diced for positions throughout the pack, as Wallace began to drive away from the field. Wallace’s brutal pace would find him entering lapped traffic by lap twelve with Jeff Taylor being his first victim.

At lap 20 the top five running order consisted of Wallace, Clint Smith, Brady Smith, Jimmy Owens, and Ray Cook. While lapped traffic created problems for some of his competitors, Wallace was lapping competitors with ease with a straight away lead by lap 30. By lap 35, Owens and Brady Smith were duking it out side by side for the 3rd spot, while Bloomquist and Cook had their own side by side battle for the 5th position.

The first caution of the event would fly on lap 40 as Brian Birkhofer from Muscatine, Iowa rolled to a stop with a flat tire. As soon as Duane Johnson displayed the yellow flag, Birkhofer headed to the pits and returned quickly with fresh rubber. At the time of the caution the top ten running order consisted of Wallace, Clint Smith, Owens, Brady Smith, Bloomquist, Ray Cook, Steve Francis, Michael England (who started 21st), Brandon Kinzer, and Billy Moyer. The field lined up for the customary double file restart, and as the race resumed green flag action England continued his march to the front as he passed Francis for the sixth spot with Ray Cook being shuffled back through the field. 10th starting Billy Moyer from Batesville, Arkansas was also on the move as he began a side by side battle with Francis for the seventh position by lap 46.

Lap 56 would find the leaders in lapped traffic once again, as Wallace continued to drive away from the field. Yellow flag conditions returned to the speedway on lap 60 when Brian Shirley from Chatham, Illinois rolled to a stop with a flat tire. Shirley darted to the pits for fresh tires, before returning to the track to begin his march to the front.

The top ten at the time of the caution consisted of Wendell Wallace, Clint Smith, Brady Smith, Owens, Bloomquist, England, Moyer, Earl Pearson Jr., Francis, and Jimmy Mars. On the ensuing restart, mayhem would break out as the field began to stack up exiting turn four. The end result was Michael England and Brandon Kinzer involved in a melee on the front straight as Ray Cook headed pitside with a flat tire. Cook and Kinzer would continue, while England’s strong run would come to an end.

The next restart would go much more smoothly as Moyer used the hub to dart past Brady Smith for the fourth position. As was the case for the first portion of the race, Wallace once again motored away from Clint Smith, as Birkhofer continued his march from the rear of the field to the 8th position by lap 70. Lap 73 once again found the leaders in lapped traffic with Moyer moving in on Jimmy Owens as the pair began a lengthy side by side battle for the third position. Moyer would dispose on Owens on lap 79, as Owens fell into the grasps of Bloomquist with the pair battling for the fourth position.

The next several laps would feature battles for position all around the 3/8 mile oval as Birkhofer cracked the top five on lap 88. The event’s final caution would fly on lap 91, when Scott Bloomquist rolled to a stop in turn two with mechanical woes. Bloomquist would head to the pits and would be done for the night. The remaining nine laps would see chaos ensue throughout the pack with Wallace on cruise control at the front. Moyer overtook Clint Smith for the second position on the restart, and four laps later, Brian Shirley, who went to the back of the field at the race’s midway point, would battle his way past Clint Smith for the third position.

The win marked Wallace’s second straight O’Reilly Show Me 100 triumph and his third overall. In the post race interview, Wallace dedicated the win to his late Father, Hootie Wallace, and commented “this win means more to this team than anyone could ever imagine.” Moyer, Shirley, Clint Smith, and Brady Smith rounded out the top five for the event.

Earlier on Saturday evening, Earl Pearson Jr. topped the Manufacturer’s Dash on behalf of Mastersbilt Race Cars. The field was rounded out by Scott Bloomquist (Bloomquist Race Cars), Ray Cook (Carolina Performance Race Cars), Al Purkey (Larry Shaw Race Cars), Brandon Kinzer (JB Performance GRT Race Cars), Johnny Cloer Jr. (GRT Race Cars), Shannon Babb (CJ Rayburn Race Cars), Jamie Elam (Rocket Race Cars), and Todd Morrow (Warrior Race Cars).

Wendell Wallace topped the Miller Brothers Coal/Hawkeye Trucking Previous Champions Dash over Terry Phillips, Billy Moyer, Scott Bloomquist, and Ray Cook.

The top 24 qualifiers were inverted for the heat races on Friday night. A fast, racey track produced two, three, and even four wide racing throughout all of the heat races. Clint Smith, Wendell Wallace, Brady Smith, Jimmy Owens, Brandon Kinzer, and Ray Cook each won a twenty lap heat race.

The three b-main events on Saturday night were topped by Johnny Cloer Jr. from Senoia, Georgia, Al Purkey from Coffeyville, Kansas, and Michael England from Glasgow, Kentucky.
