An day of rain forced Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway officials to postpone Saturday's Winged Sprint Car Shootout to October 26th. Rain firday night and Saturday morning made the surface extremely muddy, forcing the postponement of the event.
However, the Greer family is happy to try again on Saturday night, October 26 where the winged warriors will race for a $2000 first prize (and $200 to start), along with late models and modifieds. Hot laps are slated for 6 p.m.
This will be the first time in five years that the roar of winged sprint cars will be heard at the Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway near Calvert City. The last appearance of the winged sprint cars was in 1997 featuring the World of Outlaws before a packed house.
Early indications are that Sikeston, Missouri’s Jerrod Hull, a part-time campaigner with the World of Outlaws regular and Gumout tours plans to race at Kentucky Lake, along with Kevin Stepter of Metropolis, Illinois and racing legend Chuck "The One Armed Bandit" Amati of Freeman Spur, Illinois. Indy 500 veteran Jimmy Kite and teammate Robbie Standridge are also considering competing in the Shootout. A large field of cars is expected for the event as many of the weekly tracks around the region will have closed down for the winter. Other drivers from Auto Tire and Racepark in Benton, Missouri, St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, Missouri, Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstaudt, Indiana are expected to compete as well as drivers from the surrounding states. In fact, the track continues to get many calls from drivers and fans alike about the upcoming shootout.
One important note for competitors is that mufflers are required at Kentucky Lake.
Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway is a high banked 3/8 mile dirt oval situated off of Interstate 24 about 25 miles southeast of Paducah. The track, which reminds many people of a smaller version of the famous Eldora Speedway, has a state of the art lighting system, seating for several thousand spectators on aluminum bleachers set in concrete, hospitality suites that overlook the front straightaway, and a concession stand that is rated as one of the best anywhere.
