Farmington, MO (July 3) -- With the birth of our country in the forefront, fireworks at intermission and hot weather. Racing at St Francois County Raceway was hot as a firecracker. Employees of Soaring Eagle Distributing on hand with cold beverages, Tommy Worley, Jr, Brent Thompson, Mike Savage and Charlie Savage all celebrated this Independence Day weekend in the Winners Circle.
Tommy Worley, Jr, Farmington, MO picks up yet another win in the Sprint Division. Driving the number 88 of Jeff Wurst, Worley started his run for the front from inside the second row. As the green flag dropped Pole sitter Joey Montgomery raced into turn one on the high side followed by Steve Short. Worley was on the bottom and slid up the track in front of the highflying Montgomery. Montgomery hit the binder hard. Bumper contact was imminent. Disaster almost certain, but all cleared. Short saw a small opening and made a try for the lead, but fell back slightly. Joey Boyd found his way through and would lead lap one. Boyd would later spin his car and lose the lead. As the leader worked their way through traffic, Worley had built a lead and Montgomery was coming hard actually banging the wall in turn four. Worley also banged the wall as the cushion was pushed to the max. In the meantime, Jimmy Hurley quietly worked the field for a third place finish after starting in the eighth spot on the grid. Fourth place finisher, Casey Barnhouse had a nice run from sixth and Jimmy Bridgeman completed the top five after a thirteenth place starting position. Bridgeman also had the “honors” of doing the wing dance in his heat by rolling the car.
In the very competitive A-Modified Division, a familiar face came forward for his second win of the season. Brent Thompson, Park Hills, MO had to battle David Shepard for the win. Shepard got the draw as the green came out, chased by Thompson, Billy Smith, and Kasey Nations. The lead was short lived as on lap 2 Thompson too the lead and held on for the win. It was not easy, as Shepard stayed close the whole distance. It appeared from time to time that they would exchange paint. Thompson said with the exception of a bumper tag no contact was noticed. Four cautions slowed the event, three for spinning cars and one for safety. Thompson ground out the win. Shepard drove hard and settled for runner-up honors. Third place went to the always exciting Billy Smith, who liked the top lane. Fourth went to Kasey Nation and fifth to Kent Nations.
Racing in the B-Modified Division has two drivers at the front of the field separated in points by a small margin. Mike Savage and Kenny Harris are battling it our both for the win and the Championship. Each won there heats and Savage would go on to win the feature and gain a couple of points (see website www.sfcr-online.com for updates) towards the Title. Surviving caution periods Savage and Harris led the freight train to the finish for first and second. Third Place goes to the winner of a week ago, Eddie Gross. Fourth place finds Shannon Burch and fifth to John Bohn.
Pure Street feature action took place before the fireworks display at intermission as to much daylight would not allow the “works” to be effective. Charlie Savage and Chris Boyd brought the field to the green for the 15 lap affair. Savage jumped out to the front followed by Eric Sarakas, Boyd, C J Wright and Kodi Savage followed. Savage and Boyd stayed close until a caution waved and a cloud of smoke come from the 3 car of Boyd. This also showed during his heat, but maybe was not an issue at the time. It later proved to fatal to his engine in the feature. Parts were scattered and he finished in the top 10. From that point Savage had to deal with Eric Sarakas. Sarakas has been moving to the front the season and on this night gave Charlie all he wanted. He would finish second. Brian Stephens finishes third, followed by C J Wright and Joe Clark.
Next Saturday evening will be $5.00 main grandstand admission. As always children under the age of 12, with a paying adult, will be admitted free. Pit Passes remain at $25.00. Action gets underway with hot laps around 6:00 and racing will follow. Gates open at 4:00.
