A Challenge for UMP & Tri-City Speedway

With the UMP Pro Late Model Championship scheduled for this weekend at Tri-City I would like to challenge UMP and Track Officials to do everything possible to prove all the cheating rumors about this class wrong. We have all heard the talk about rampant cheating going on in UMP Pro Late Model class and this is your (UMP & Tri-City Speedway) chance to return the integrity to this class.

Let’s pull out all the stops and do some meaningful tech inspections in this class. Tire inspections (for chemicals and compounds), engine tech (valve springs, pop-up, rockers, sealing bolts etc.), shocks (check for canisters and do a claim/swap), check for fuel additives and any other rule printed in the 2009 rule book. Do a simple visual inspection of ALL cars that enter for the weekend and then do some random checks after the heats, B mains and features.

We have raced 40 times at 9 different UMP tracks this year and have been teched a total 2 times. We have seen tech on cars that have raced with us 2 other times. 4 out of 40 doesn’t seem acceptable for what is supposed to be a National Sanction. And this lack of tech is what is causing all the rumors and finger pointing.

We have made many inquiries to UMP officials about rules enforcement and while they say they will send a guy to the track on occasion their normal response is “the tracks are responsible for weekly tech”. The tracks say they don’t have the time, money or the tools to do tech right. And so the cheating, or the perception of cheating goes on.

Well here is your chance to prove to everyone in UMP Land that cheating is not what this class is all about. Bring out all the testing equipment, the sniffers, the dogs, the durometers the no-go gauges or whatever it takes!

While I have heard that UMP may be trying out some new testing equipment this weekend, I would like to see them go all out with their tech for the sake of the class.

Will anyone step up and actually police the rules????? We shall see this weekend!

Joe,
I feel the same way you do. UMP has taken a dump on us when it comes to teching these cars. One other complaint that UMP has dumped on all of us completely is the national championship night at Tri-city is suposed to be the only place you can get points to determine the championship. When i called UMP and asked why they were allowing all these other tracks to run specials to help out their favorite driver, and not show up at tri-city for the true championship, i asked what was the difference in Eldora speedway and their national championship night and Tri-city's national championship night for the crates. If these guys dont want to come to the national championship then they should be racing their crates without points. This was the rule last year and thats the way it should be this year. If i was Kevin and Tammy i would tell UMP to stick their championship if Ump wasnt going to stand behind them. I've said my peace.
thank you,
Rick Heck

P.S.
with UMP its all about how much money they can get out of the parts we buy. they gotta have their cut...shocks, tires, whats next?

The local tracks should drop U.M.P. anyway the late model national points aren`t about the local racer anymore it favors the guys running the summernationals that most "local" racers can`t afford to do anyway.I think all U.M.P is concerned about is getting their sanction money and that is about it.

I'll second that

If I had an idea about how to coordinate a U M P ******* I'd be working on it now. About the only time I've seen them around would be big money or summer nats races. Wouldn't we all guess the point fund would grow with all of the UMP approved stickers being sold to manufacturers for $10.00 a piece. (minimum 50) Seems to me the only thing growing is ump pocket book!!!! JMO Jim

Welcome to the next level........

The next level? Atleast we know UMP will pay out it's point fund.

How many tracks nationwide are running UMP sanctioned races on any given Friday or Saturday night? If you have a better idea about how UMP should be conducting its business, perhaps you should be contacting Sam Driggers or someone from World Racing Group. Whining about it on this message board will have no positive effects and only stands to harm our local tracks and local drivers.

When you go to McDonald's (not picking on McD's, just making an example), and they mess up your order, who do you complain to? Do you complain to another customer or do you go back up to the counter and actually talk to someone who can do something about your problem?

Does UMP have a 800 number?? Anyone know??

World Racing Group does certainly have an 800 number. It is on www.umpracing.com

If it weren't for UMP, you'd be able to race at one track. Because they would all have different rules!

How many tracks does UMP sanction on any given Friday or Saturday night? A lot right? Do you expect UMP officials to be at all of them every night? If so, your membership prices will need to go up as well as increased sanctioning fees on tracks. If not the increase, then the point fund will have to decrease.

If UMP can make it out to a track a few times per year, I'd say that's pretty good considering the resources necassary to makle these visits and the number of tracks that are sanctioned.

Can't expect UMP to be at all of them all of the time. I believe it was stated that UMP said it was up to the track to do the tech on a weekly basis. If the track doesn't have time or the equipment necessary to make sure drivers are abiding by the rules then they have become nothing more than suggestions not rules. The "honor system" will never work in racing.

Better hire the fat guy in the red coat with the sleigh.;) I think he is free in the summers anyway.

His wife won't let him. Apparently the last time he got drunk and didn't come home from April through October so the Mrs. said no more racing with the boys.

Fastrack does have one thing good over ump they teck and you must run 13 events to run the big shows . someone new cant just come in and get the big purse and take points away from you at the end. Ump should really look at this and one driver racing more then one event each night. The person driving has a advantage over other drivers because he is finding out what the track is doing . Just my comments

My post wasn’t an attempt to bash UMP or the tracks they sanction. I am very happy UMP decided to
take on the Crate class when they did. I also know that UMP and local race tracks are operating on
limited funds, just as most racers are today.

I was simply stating that there has not been sufficient tech to maintain the integrity of the class. The
rumors and/or perception of “cheating” have grown all year long and are beginning to hurt the chances
of growth in the class. I have spoken with many current and potential drivers in the Crate class and most
agree that more tech would help.

I challenged UMP and Tri‐City Speedway to do more tech this weekend to try to clear up the rumors and
misperceptions. From what I am hearing, my challenge may just be met…………….we will see!
