You said you wouldn't tell!

The motor costs half of the sportsman motor, you run it at less rpm so in theory it should last longer, the tires are cheaper, the replacement front end parts are cheap, and you race for more big money than a sportsman now that the fall nationals show dropped their payout.

I believe everything about a street stock is cheaper then a sportsman...I also believe if the sportsman were cut from the program you'd see more guys go to the SS class then move up to mods. I'm all and all the SS guys have been putting on a hell of a show the last couple year and if ya really wanna know I'd say hell they been some of the best door to door racing since I started going. Rick Rhoads,Dave Jones,George Price to guys today like Jason worley,Dave Armstrong,Danny Ems,Tommy Gaither and on.what a great group of legends to the rising stars of today. This class bring in some good fans and will always be the class I follow.Jmo

I think the best thing for UMP is to drop the sportsman, add SS and teak the motor rules just a little. Run a Holley 4412 carb then add a true sport mod class not just a 3 link mod class. That way when a SS driver wants to move up to mods they can take the motor out of the SS and put in a sport mod. The sportsman class is a dieing class

I believe the bmod class does run a 4412 carb and many guys still like the SS OR SPORTSMAN

OMG...pole sniffer made a post we can all read lol !!! But anyway I would like to see the street stock guys be able to use the 4412 carb. Idk whts your thoughts Dave on that carb

If a street stock is cheaper tell me where you save money? I'm getting ready to build a pure street and the parts list isn't much different. You can buy a very good sportsman on here right now for $2500.00 rolling chassis. Tell me how you can build a competetive PS for under that? What is the difference in the motors... heads, intake and carb. Sure you can save a few bucks there, but not a significant amount.

Don't compare used with new first of all. The chassis is pretty much the same cost. The motor was half the cost of a sportsman motor and again like I said before the weekly savings on tires (not having to run D's) has been huge.

Rockers, distributor, header style , connecting rods and on and on a sportsman turns 7000 and up ,pure streets hyd. Cam is 5000-6000 big cost in motor difference. Rochester carb and Holley will perform the same if you have agood carb guy they both are 500 Cfm! When new both cars are close in costs . For price and availability call Brian at 573-543-5030 or cell 573-883-6768 thanks.

I just can't really see the engine being 50% of the cost of a Sportsman engine really. Some of the parts are less expensive but the labor is going to be at least as much or more. The cost to do development will be the same too. The really good Rochester cores are difficult to find and expensive when you do and one with a good metering package can be ok but not as good as a 4412 for the same price.

I don't doubt that the cost to run the car from week to week is probably less just due to the tire rule and less rpm.

One the Sportsman and Street Stock cars issues is they both have a identity problem. Many recall fondly of the days when the racing cars looked different. Die hard racers and fans know the shapes of cars racing and can quickly ID them, LM, Mod, SS, etc. We are looking from the inside out. Let's look from the other direction. The bodies on Sportsman cars are want-a-be Late Models, at first glance one can be mistaken for the the other. The Sportsman cars need some design feature to identify them. Stock looking roof line with no sails, any other (cheap) ideas? Next is the SS cars, think about it, the bodies on these cars are some 26 years old, give or take. Many of the drivers that run them weren't even born yet. (Of course the attraction here is you can buy a body parts from Performance Bodies, etc.) The frame/mechanicals don't have to change. Just make the body more modern. The bodies are hung anyway, just hang a different car body from a wrecking yard, any brand and model and more stock looking. (Of course it would have to be close to the race car wheelbase, etc.) SS should be a class that is not all 80's Monte Carlos. (Almost vintage racing.) Underneath you know what works, Chevy. But what if your a Ford or Mopar fan? Hang a Mopar body on it. You know the fans would love to cheer for a Ford, Mopar and Chevy. I feel it would broaden the appeal for SS and could be a shot in the arm the class needs.

I like the SS just the way they are...these guys are always changing stuff up with designs and lettering ! To compare a SS and sportsman is like comparing apple's and oranges. Clutches,a arms, tranny, shocks and so on there is so much of a difference. Just like when I took a set of heads to Mullins there set a motor for a pevely sportsman that wouldn't meet the rules but it was setting there for assembly with all them pretty parts lol

chiledawg.jpg Street Stock or Sportsman? Hint The 4 car may be the 2012 UMP Champion...

Wht does the picture have to do with anything? Just because it has a steel body don't mean sh-t does it? You could take Herzogs UMP champion car and do the same thing. It's what's underneath that matters ain't it?
