Bedrock 2012 Class Structure......please read and comment!!!!

Livin' the dream.........
My other thread has become more about the clone rules than the class structure. Dad's please let me know what you are thinking. Without input from you folks I'll assume everyone has read and agrees with the proposal.

I'm for it as long as we can create classes with at least 6 or 8 weekly karts per class.

After the meeting there was discussion on the Jr classes and how to get more in line with the rest of the karting world. I've read the WKA tech manual, searched the online forums and spoke to some different tracks. Here's what I've come up with and it pretty much mirrors Sangchris and Duquoin. I think the realignment will give new racers a chance to run up front and allow the "veteran" juniors to gain seat time in faster karts.

There will not be any clone /flathead mixing, except in rookie B. Way too many variables and haven't gotten a real good answer on how to make it work.

THIS IS NOT SET IN STONE...........YET!

Looking for constructive feedback from the Rookie and Jr. parents. A decision will be made by the end of Feb.

Bedrock Kart Classes 2012:

Rookie B (5-8 yrs. old) WKA .425 purple plate (250 lbs.) Pump gas only.
Clone engines allowed with a .375 ARC red restrictor plate (250). Pump gas only.

JR1 (8-10 yrs. old) WKA .425 purple plate (250 lbs.)

JR2 (10-12 yrs. old) WKA .500 turquoise plate (275 lbs.)

JR3 (12-15 yrs. old) WKA .575 gold plate (300 lbs.)

Light Briggs flathead (325 lbs.)

Medium Briggs flathead (350 lbs.)

Heavy Briggs flathead (375 lbs.)

JR 1 Clone (8-10 yrs. old) ARC .425 restrictor plate (265 lbs.)
Must run pump gas only 87-93 octane.

JR 2 Clone (10-12 yrs. old) ARC .550 restrictor plate (290 lbs.)
Must run pump gas only 87-93 octane.

JR 3 Clone (12-15 yrs. old) No restrictor (320 lbs.)
Must run pump gas only 87-93 octane.

I think splitting up the JR classes is a good idea if enough karts show up to make multiple classes. The key is having 3 or more karts in each class.

Does anyone have feedback on the JR weight rules? I think the 15lb heavier weight rules for the JR clones is to much?

I appreciate the fact you are trying to give more kids the opportunity to run up front and get more in line with other tracks. However I am a little concerned with whether each class will have 6 to 8 karts per week. The JR1 kart count averaged 8.4 karts per week last year. If you take the first four races of 2011 out of the average, the remaining 11 races averaged 7.5 karts per week in the JR1 class. There were 4 weeks last year with a kart count of 6 or less. This may result in classes with 2 or 3 karts some nights. I took these numbers from the Bedrock website results section.

The Burris Thunder tour runs a race in Peoria and a race in Decatur this summer and they have JR1 ages 8-11 (.425 plate) and JR3 ages 12-15 (.550 plate).

My son (Kaleb in the #49) will turn 11 between the end of the Duquoin season and the start of the 2012 season at Bedrock. We just invested in a newer kart and had the motor freshened for purple plate not anticipating any changes to the Bedrock Junior classes so we will have to spend some cash to make the switch. Understand this will not keep us from racing at Bedrock this year if the decision is made to switch the classes.

I want you to know I am not complaining but instead just trying to provide some feedback and I trust the decision will be made with the kids best interest in mind. I would suggest going back through the records from last year and see how many of the regular JR1 racers will be moved to the JR2 division to get an idea of how many karts can be expected on a regular basis in each class.

Thanks for what you do to provide a close, enjoyable racing opportunity. Your efforts are appreciated.

Kevin, thanks for the input. I know we are going to have several new kart racers this coming season. My intent is to figure out how to make multiple classes work if we get enough to make it worth while. I love watching Alex race 10 or 11 karts but at this point I'd be fine with him racing 5 or 6 in a faster class. Looking at the current field I'd say there'd be 5 or 6 JR2's every week. That would leave the other 2 or 3 plus any new racers that are 9 and up. Last year the JR 1 class was pretty good. Those nights when the kart count was down in there class it was down across the board.

I can't comment on the Thunder Tour. I haven't really did much research on it. It may be the way to go.

I understand your concern about changing from purple to blue and will be talking to several motor builders this coming weekend. I will find out what the cost would be to convert one to the other. I'm no motor guy for sure but I'm pretty sure from purple to blue is just the plate. I think the cost jumps when going to the gold plate, different springs and cam.

Here's one other thing to consider. Two classes of 6 could help the track more than 1 class of 12. Here's why, when I started racing at Bedrock it was nothing for me to sign up for 2 classes. It's impossible for that to happen with the current class structure. I know a few folks that would like to run two classes but can't. There isn't enough time between heats to make it happen. The track really can't slow down the pace much, or the folks in the stands get bored and head out. This kills the concession stand which really helps keep the place open.

Again, thanks for the input. It's exactly what I'm looking for. Hopefully, we can find a solution that we can all live with, no one is going to be completely happy but maybe we can find middle ground to work from.

Tobi

Tobi,

If there are 5 to 6 karts in each class and it helps the track then I am all in, even if we have to make some kart/motor changes. I have some ideas on how to promote Bedrock and karting in the area in general I would like to talk to you about. I assume you will be at DuQuoin this weekend so maybe we can find the time to talk about that there.

I appreciate your consideration of my comments and thanks again for what you do at Bedrock to give my son a place to do what he loves to do and watch! RACE!

We'll be there on saturday for sure. Thinking about going down friday night that's still up in the air.

Tobi,
If you want to check out the Burris Thunder Tour there is a thread which includes the class structure in the Midwest Tracks section of Bob's Fourcycle website. See you Saturday.
Kevin

Tobi,
I didn't get a chance to talk to you yesterday but I wanted to let you know our engine builder said all we need to do to switch from purple to blue plate is change the plate and the jet. If we can consistently have 5 or 6 karts in JR 1 and JR2 I am all for it. I still want to talk to you about promoting Bedrock and karting in general. I will try to give you a call later.
Kevin

Kevin....I got the same information form my builder on the plate motors. From the horses mouth the Smith Bros kid runs the same motor at most races, they change plates and jets between classes. Alex will start the season with a purple plate motor and a blue plate motor. Hopefully, we'll have a big turn out for the first week and we can get a good head count on the kids and classes.

i think the jr3 clone unrestricted would be a great class like myself with kyle seel he not ready for pro clone to young

project k&k

do you have a junior champ class, what age and weight, rookie is no cage right please help me out thanks

We currently do not have a junior champ class. However, 3 karts make a class at Bedrock, so if you can bring 2 more champs, then we will have a class for you! You are correct, the Rookie class is no cage.

i guess it all depends on who shows up to race. tyler # 24 is 9yrs old will be 10 in dec. would prefer to race jr 1 this year. we have the same engine builder as kfuller so it would easy to change depending on the entries.

The way the rules will be written will allow for a 10 year old to race the year in jr 1 even if he/she turns 11 during the season. You must start the year in the appropriate class. When they turn 11 they can move up but will not be allowed to move back down.

Determining the drivers class by age will follow WKA.

Are you allowing the disk clutches for the Jrs as well? We are trying to figure out what to do with some new jrs that are starting this year. Thank you

John...pretty sure we are going to allow disk clutches across the board. I'll post a definitive answer in a few days. Also, LO 206 can be a class if 3 or more show up to race.

I'm working hard to get the race pace slowed down enough for folks to run multiple classes, keep the stands happy and still get home at a reasonable hour.
