Brian Shaw gets hit in head with jack handle at Haubstadt

I was not there, so this is second/third hand information . There was contact on the track, after the race Shaws crew approached Tatums car then followed him to his trailer then the fight took place. I am NOT AT ALL saying hitting someone is ok , with anything , fist included, but when you enter someone else's pit you put yourself in a very comprising situation. IF that is what happened
Think this is also part of what has happened to racing.. People spending too much money, and taking things to the extreme and it has taken the fun out of the sport, and ran a lot of people off from racing.

Hope the injured gets well soon, and that all parties involved realize this sport is supposed to be a fun hobby.

Brian Shaw is one of the most talented short track racers in the region. It doesn't matter if it is the DuQuoin mile or a short track like Haubstadt, he will always be one to beat if present; not to mention he is a pretty nice guy too. But with that said, it is also no secret that Brian is hot-headed racer and his team is notorious for getting into altercations in the pits.

The man that hit Bryan had to have been provoked and agitated enough to go to the extreme that he did; people just don't go around swinging jack handles at peoples' heads. I witnessed the on-track incident and it was very minor in nature. Shaw was able to march right back up, pass the Tatum guy, and finish at the front of the pack. There must be more to the story because if this on-track altercation is what caused Brian and his crew to start a fight, they went to just as an extreme as the handle swinging guy did by starting it in the first place.

Drivers, and or the car owners are the root of the problem. I worked on a modified team for several years and was told from day 1 by the driver/owner that it was not my place to EVER approach, or say anything to anybody over an on-track incident, no matter the situation. With that said, it is the team leaders job to control the people associated with the team.

My prayers are with Brian and his family and hope for a speedy recovery. My prayers are also with the other team as it sounds like they probably need some too. Bad deal all the way around...

I would, at the very least, hope the person got charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

As for the guns comment, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it doesn't happen in the next year or two. I'm not going to turn this into a gun debate, but there are people who think they have the right to carry anywhere, anytime, regardless of local law or facility policy, because it's their "constitutional right". It's this "don't tread on me" mentality that is going to get someone killed.

If you weren't going to turn it into a gun debate then why did you bother bringing it up?

to bigg swiggs comment, most people come to race not to fight and if a gang comes into ones pit it is not cowardly to even up the odds the last two weeks there have been a chance of things getting out if hand first was craig smith second was the beilong hoffman deal the tracks need to step up first thing should be no tolerance for rough driving!

Hoping for a full recovery for Mr. Shaw. It is a shame that this happened to him and I have nothing but respect for him and his family. I do not know the situation as it occurred nor am I attempting to defend or endorse any of the parties involved individual actions.

But with that said: If I were publicly approached by one or a group individuals and I anticipated bodily harm or feared for my life, My first reaction would be to distance myself from the situation. If the threat still existed after exhausting this option, I would probably arm myself with anything available. Whether or not I swung an object or fired a shot would be determined by the aggressor(s). Taking this course of action keeps me within my legal rights "to defend myself using deadly force", and you can bet your last dollar that I would not hesitate to do so.

Again, prayers for Brian. But also, some of you people are nuts. Trying to tie this to a gun issue. There wasn't a gun used here so why bring it up. If you want to give away your rights that were hard fought by our forefathers then so be it but don't give away my rights so quickly. When is the last time you can tell me that a gun was used at a race track. Yet you are predicting that one will be in a year or two. This is plain stupid. Stop using incident s like this to attack guns. My right to carry anywhere anyhow will hopefully sometime save someone's life!

One more thing; these tracks need to be more aggressive in warning of the circumstances of going into another competitors pit area. You should be kicked out for a period. this should be mentioned at every drivers meeting and aggressively enforced. If track owners aren't motivated by anything else they should think about the effect on their insurance. Tracks tolerate too much. Like stopping on the track to argue a call. Anyone who does this should be sent home for the night. Tougher enforcement and constant reminders are needed. In addition, UMP is light on punishment. Why wasn't there punishment in the Hoffman Bielong incident for example. And for the record, I am good friends with both guys but it doesn't matter. That's how things escalate out of control.

Fights are going to happen but unless you have stern warnings and tough penalties this will continue at a heightened rate.

I have personally been in drivers meetings multipule times at a track and told we like when you fight. Just do it on front straight away.. Look I like watching a good fight.. I come to track though to race and watch good clean racing..

R graves do you have a hard on against Brian cause this is the 4th or 5th site that I have seen you running your mouth at something you apparently don't know the facts about the guy that hit Brian actually went after his son as they were walking back to the pits they inturn came back to the 1s pit. Brian knew nothing about this, then Brian went to talk to Zack F and was walking back when he was almost backed over by someone and he came around the car and then was hit from behind. So I hope this helps with your questions. There are 17 statements to the police that say the same thing from all different kinds of people in the pits. None of this should have happened and this is the semi short version

Talked with someone close to Brian and they said Brian was doing better today.. He's getting up and walking to the bathroom.. He knows his visitors also which is great.. He's pretty roughed up with a bruised collar bone swollen eye & cheek 11 staples in forehead a fractured skull.. The positive thing about all this is that his brain is not bleeding anymore and the swelling has went down.. Im posting this for people that are concerned with his well being.. I'm not going to argue with any of the idiots that have no clue what they're even talking about..

This kind of incident is EXACTLY why I do carry my weapon to the track. Not only for my own safety, but for the safety of others, when someone looses all rational thought and escalates to deadly force.

I hope I NEVER have to be in a situation to exercise this level of protection, but if the unfortunate events do unfold in front of me, I'd be remiss if I didn't step in.

Although I do personally have specialized training in this area, and I was welcomed by a deputy working security at MMSP for carrying.

BTW, I do not carry concealed. Mine is visible to all who may approach. Maybe that visual presence would have made the weapon wielding perp think twice.

No hard on for the man; actually a big fan of his. Just trying to make sense why this incident took place. If what you said is correct, the guy has a long tough road ahead of him; legally and financially. Praying for all..

I am not saying that you have not heard that, however I have listened in on several driver's meetings over the years and have NEVER heard a promotor/owner say that.

Most recently, I've been involved with this sport for going on 12 years. Prior to that from my childhood until 1976 I attended weekly shows with my parents. I've seen everything from Bob Minor fighting a competitor in turn 2 at Lake Hill, a blood massacre in the office of a local track, the infamous Baker/Yarborough incident televised on national tv, and beyond. Most recently an altercation seems to be the norm rather than the exception. I've seen racers enter another pit area to ask "why didn't you get out of my way, You cost me a win" Racing and disagreements between competitors will go hand in hand for as long as the sport exist. The question now becomes, how far is too far and when is enough, enough? And most importantly, who will step up an do something about it.

I can't say that the above link is the mentality of every track I have been to, but I have heard this "quote" multiple times over the years and in my travels... I've even been to one track (SE MO) where the promoter offered a tool shed for the drivers to settle their differences.

At some point the sanctioning body or promoter needs to draw a line or at least provide adequate security to prevent an incident as horrific as the Shaw incident from occurring. Pleas for fighting on the front stretch should not be acceptable. Fines and Penalties for doing so, should be. Entering another teams pits, UNWELCOMED, should not be tolerated,. Race officials an security should be on their game to identify the problems before they become altercations.

Sorry, just my two cents.
