Midstate Raceway - White City, Illinois

WOW! What a time in history. They had some great races, had some great cars and drivers and there are LOTS of stories to tell. How about the night the Lumpy Loughary didn't know if he wanted to be a pilot or a race car driver when he left the first turn and flew through the tree? How about the weekend they had the open competition street car nationals and qualified over 100 street stocks from all over the midwest and Canada? I think we qualified 102 cars and didn't get finished until about 2 in the morning then came back the next night and ran the big feature.

Larry Phillips, Mike Wallace and many other great late model drivers visited that 1/2 mile oval. And don't forget the winged sprint cars. Jack Hewitt (WHERE DID HE GO???) put on some great shows.

AND how about the parties in the bar? WOW! What memories!!!!!

first off ,it was not a 1/2 mile,3d maby, not a half,,i was there for the first race in my old allied mod,got the destinction of being the first race car (they raced bikes there befor)to get on my lid (turn 3&4,sliding into 3 hit a ute tire on the outside edge of the track,,never could figure out why they would place a tire on the top side of the track)we bandaded the car and i was running 6th when a rear tire let go,,i'm thinking it may have been john seets that won,,ask allen conroy he will know as he owned the track at the time,,,,i was there for the bif street stock show,,had darwin roaches nova there, out of a 150 so cars i qualifed 66th and i went out 126th to time in,had the fastest time of the last,50 or 60 car,kind-a proud of that, some where there is a picture of my lap with rooster tails 30ft in the air...but then the deal in the heat took all the steam out of my sails,,bout 11pm we loaded up and went home....

Midwest Connection - White City memories

I do remember the stock cars racing there, but as far as the first winner I have no idea.

I worked White City Speedway - as a racing official working for the AMA about that time. I worked the time trials and scoring for the most part, as well as doing the payout's which was interesting at times. The flat track racing bikes at White City was always a lot of fun.

Ah yes, a few beers went down in the club house as well - those that I remember that is.

White City was a fun race track to be at for sure, no matter what genre of racers were on the track. I will see what I can find out as far as the stock cars.

Have a good day...see you at the races

White City

It's a shame that racing can't be that fun these days.:( The saddest day was when the photographer got killed in turn 3. The dust was terrible.

I have to say White City was probably the most pure fun I ever had at a racetrack. Particularly my favorite were the street stock nationals. You never really knew who was going to show up and guys like Seets and Davey Jones would build cars specifically for the race, year after year.

The clubhouse was one-of-a-kind though. I'm certain it's the rose-colored glasses of my childhood, but I cannot remember ever seeing a fight in there despite the mixture of alcohol and after-race results. It truly was an amazing place.

Man, what I'd give to see those street stocks again.

Pat Lysell and myself took our very first midget rides at White city. Pat in Jeff Lees volkwagon powered car and Myself in Jeff Palazzolos v4 chevy powered car. One of em had rented the track for testing. Man was that joint dusty,a couple laps and ya couldn't see where ya was going. Never got the chance to race there, except for the Australion pursuit that took place that day.

white city

I stopped there a couple of months ago, there is a traler right behind the front straight away wall which is still there. Does anyone have any videos from there? i would put them on dvd for free if interested.

the person that got killed at the streetstock show was a off duty highway patrol officer,he was flagging in turn 3,,,,,,THE TRACK NEVER WAS A HALF MILE,,,EVER!!!!!!!!

the track was to a half mile and the person that bought it from the track owners used it as a practice track for horses
