Granite last Sunday

you go that right retired but its tcs what do you expect

i told you hound would change the subject. hound,in all of his wisdom, was trying to make the point that open wheel cars cause delays. when he was proven wrong,he started rambling on (i don't know about you all,but i get a headache trying to untangle hound's messages and try to make sense of them)something about danville and pevely; which wasn't the subject to begin with. maybe the show would've gone faster with sprint cars and midgets. after all, they are a second or two a lap faster than the lms. i'm sure the sn races were good at tcs; so i'm not bashing the lm's or tcs.

babb runs good,no doubt. but so do o'neal, moyer, korte, the fausts, and a bunch of others. would've liked to seen the show on the 1/2 myself. that is a neat racetrack.

the late model race couldnt be near as bad as the overpriced woo show I watched a tcs 2 years ago .$32for 22 sprint cars. every late model race that I have seen there was better than that.the only open wheel cars worth a damn are modifieds.

Now that I've found all my crayons, let me explain what was going on "behind the scenes". At 6:15, the track was ready to go. We call for the cars. Where are they? Finally they decide they're ready about 7pm. Then it's time to qualify. On the 1/2 mile, we're looking at an average of about 22 seconds per car. So you give them their 1 lap to get up to speed plus their 2 official laps, and we're looking at 66 seconds per car. Multiply that times 35 cars, and you're looking at an almost 40 minute qualifying session. Doug's note: the midgets did not have to work qualifying into their program.

So we roll the dash, heats, etc, and we get to intermission. I guess we could have run the Modified consy, but with an 18 car semi, you're chancing a half hour event. With the doppler radar showing rain in Troy, Mo and heading our way, we felt the prudent choice was to go with a 15 minute intermission. At least that was the plan. As I explained in a thread on 4m, I gave them a 15 minute call, a 10 minute call, a 5 minute call, and a "Gentlemen, it's time to bring your cars to the track". After repeating this several times, the first car rolled onto the track 10 minutes after the first "Gentlemen, it's time to bring your cars to the track". We did all we could to get 'em going, short of driving the cars ourselves. That's what led to the almost 1/2 hour intermission. In the same thread on 4m, Jimmy had an interesting idea.

You can always do like they did in Florida this past winter. Tell the drivers they will be lined up for the feature in the order they come on the track.

Tim McCreadie won a feature after starting on the 2nd row when he was supposed to have started in the last row. The track owner was tired of waiting on them to line up.

Now for the pricing issue. This was a $10,000 race on the half mile. That's why the ticket was $22. Nothing against the other shows around here that paid $6000 to win, but they didn't have that 5 figure winner's check to pay. They all pay down the same, as per the Summer Nationals purse structure. That's why you saw so many cars drop out after being lapped. Why risk tearing up your equipment when it pays the same from around 12 on back. You want a good show & a cheap ticket? May I suggest the NALMS / UMP race on the 1/4 mile August 11th. It is only $2000 to win, so we can keep the prices down.

There is an interesting article on 4m called IS it time to change the UMP Summer Nationals format? It raises some interesting questions, as the current format doesn't do much to encourage passing. Check it out if you get a chance.

the only open wheel cars worth a damn are modifieds.

You obviously missed the SCRA/USAC wingless sprints on the half mile....
and it sounds like you've never seen a local midget show. I think you would have a different opinion if you did. But if not, whatever, to each his own.

well, sir,i disagree. but thank you just the same. i'm not even considering WoO,because usually the shows are poor. non-wing sprint cars are a much better show.

I beg to differ. Tell you what, pony up the $30 and go to I-55 for the World of Outlaws on August 7th. You won't be disappointed.

i55 and farmer city was 10k for only 10 bucks .and don't even get me started about the highly touted outlaws,;ets see 32 for a 1 day show or or 40 for 2 day overly large show ,which is the better choice,oh I forgot it's the OUTLAWS

I've heard stories about Lake Hill--WAY BACK in the day--lining up races by who got to the pit gate first. But to line up a feature that way today? Wow, that Florida promoter shows great initiative--and cojones.

Doug,

Letting Guys Take Thier Sweet Time To Come To The Track Is Crap. Big Boys Or Locals Whatever. People Might Not Like Allied, And I Don't Agree With Everything They Do. But, When They Call For A Race, The 3 Minute Timer Goes Off. When The 3 Minutes Is Up, You Better Be There Or They're Going Without You, Or You Tag Onto The Rear.

I Know Sometimes Guys Have Issues, And Thats Understandable. But, I've Also Been To Places Where They're Practically Begged To Come Out. That Is B/s. Let A Race Start Without Them Once And I Bet Next Time They Get The Lead Out!!!! J/m/o

Years ago Moyer missed the call for the feature at I-55 and they called the alt. and Moyer d/n get to race the feature. Years ago. But it happened.

DG, I remember that very vividly. Because I was pissed too! :)

Doug,
It shouldn't be your responsibility to get the cars on the track or tell the crews to get on the track. If anybody's job it should be the pit stewards. And some of the cars were lined up when you were saying that they were just sitting at the pit road entrance.
In instances like this the track just needs to stand up and say we're are moving on with or without you. You can't let the drivers make the calls because they'll just use the time to fine tune their cars and they'll take as long as you give them.

the tracks are in a tough situation here. they have a reasonable responsibility to keep the show moving, because as the paying fan has the expectation to see a professional and timely show. after all, they pay top $ for their seats. on the other hand,if the tracks say enough.. were going with or without them, that same fan paid to see moyer, etc, etc, race. either way,the fan is pissed.and a pissed fan is not a returning fan. what to do? i say go ahead without them.gotta draw a line somewhere.

I agree art. the line has to be drawn somewhere. Chances are if the track shows it is serious the drivers will cooperate. especially if showing them means going without someone.

Some fans might be lost if tracks bring the iron fist down on malingering drivers, but I'd bet that tracks would see an overall positive net gain in attendence if they had the guts to go on without certain big dogs and speed the program along. J/M/O
