Mike and Mike are having a GREAT time in Michigan. They are spending about 16 hours a day at the race track. Saturday Mike qualified 4th, ran 2nd in the heat and 3rd in the feature. They were pretty excited when they called.
Voigt, Moran and Schleper all too tight but will probably get better. They also run Sunday.

PS Hi Norm and the Salty Dog Crew-See ya the banquet!

Is this the only asphalt race ump does or are there others ? Did they used to more ? Thanks

I'M READY FOR SOME FRIED CHICKEN !!!

From the couple of pics. I looked at on the link earlier in the thread I thought it looked like it was outside on asphalt . Now I see that it's inside on concrete ? With the bleachers and fencing it seems as though it's a permanent track ? Just curious .. what's the deal with this place ?? Thanks

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Just got back around 4:00am Monday morning. Man what a super super time we had. Were both wore out tired, But I slept about 4 hours and woke up ready to go racin again today. Seems weird not making the mile walk from the hotel to the track this morning. Heres some more info about the weekend. Grand Rapids is roughly an 8 hour drive from STL. DeVos Place is right in the middle of downtown GR. Absolutely no parking and very little room to turn a hauler around. Devos is similar to the Cervantes’ Convention Center in downtown STL and it is not a permanent race track, merely an exhibition hall.

First thing Friday morning we were allowed to pull into the loading dock inside DeVos and unload. God what a nightmare. 16 tires, all our tools, air compressor, etc. had to be carried from the dock into the infield. No gas cans allowed inside the pits. You were required to refuel next to the firemen out on the loading dock. Oh, and yeah I forgot the worst thing....Your not allowed to fire your engine unless its to race. So can you imagine what its like pushing a Hammerle car all over the place for three days? Then we took the hauler back to the hotel (about a mile away) and walked back to DeVos. Yes, more than one trip back to the hauler was made for the forgotten air hose, breaker bar, and rear end gear.
The track was basically a concrete floor with hwy barriers making up the inside and outside walls. It is publicized as a 1/4 mile, and that seems accurate, but it is in the shape of an ice rink. You couldn’t see around the corners at all. They spray CocaCola syrup on the floor and "run it in" to make the concrete tacky. The track gets rubbered up quickly (top to bottom) and thats your racing surface. The track was so locked down that many cars would get up on two wheels and bicycle around the corner, I think the Belleville car one-wheeled a few times. They had to shut down the races frequently to pump out the exhaust fumes and get fresh air in the building, it usually took about 5 - 8 minutes.

They ran 4 classes of cars Friday and Saturday and 3 classes Sunday. Friday was open competition and we ran with the wing on. We finished 8th but the car was definately top 5. Mike was cautious knowing we had two more days to race. Saturday was UMP late models and we ran third in the feature and had the fastest car on the track for most of the race. By Sunday the other drivers had figured out the fast set up and we finished 9th.
Now I’m gonna brag on Mike a little. It sure was great seeing "the old man" run up front again. He was flat out fast and seeing the finish order posted with his name ahead of Jeep VanWormer, Donny Moran, Dan Schleiper, Mark Voigt and some of the best racers in the Michigan area on Saturday night brought a huge smile to my face. Congratulations Mike on a great weekend, hope it’s a sign of things to come this year.

One last note, we met a lot of really nice racers up there. Most of them hadn’t heard of STL RACING.Com but they have now. Just want to say a quick hello to late model drivers Jay VanDyke and Jack Emmons, and to Ron Miller (thanks for the gears). Hope everyone had a safe trip home.

If anyone has any other questions I'll be happy to answer them.

It's stories like this that make Mike Hammerle one of the best in the business. What a class act! Great job representing the STL this weekend and congrats on the great finishes!

Was just looking at the photos posted in the above reply. I figured they were running the track like asphalt cars. Nope!!!! Dirt tracking those bad cars around that concrete!!!!! Awesome event! One that would be cool to go see!

Good Luck

Mike and Crew have a safe trip there and back, have fun and most of all "KEEP THE DIRTY SIDE DOWN"
