NASCAR: Rock & Hard Place? -OR- Hypocritical

So everyone knows what happened Sunday with the payback Kenseth gave to Logano. Was it intentional?Surely must have been. Should Kenseth get a steep penalty? Most would say, absolutely.

But here's the dilemma. This stuff happens all the time. Maybe not from a car a few laps down taking out a guy who could not only win the race but severely affect his playoff chances.

NASCAR said today about the race where Logano took out Kenseth: ""That was an entirely different situation," he said. "What we're not going to do is take the style of NASCAR and parlay that into something where one driver believes the way to pay back somebody for something that happened is take matters into their own hands."

But wasn't that what Logano was doing? ... paying Kenseth back for blocking and taking matters into his own hands? When Logano took Kenseth out, that pretty much also took out Kenseth's hopes for a championship. Everyone believes Logano taking Kenseth out was intentional as well, but they say ... well Matt was blocking and they were both racing for the win.

Still in both cases, each driver was believing "the way to pay back somebody for something that happened is take matters into their own hands." And by the way, Danica flat out admitted that she purposely took out the David Gilliand car. While Gilliand is not running for win or championship, isn't that the same thing... one driver paying back another driver and taking matter into their own hands?

So what's your take on this? Is NASCAR just in between a rock and hard place or are they being hypocritical?

everybody keeps saying it was ok for logano to do it because they were racing for the lead but nobody mentions the fact it was on a high speed superspeedway at least kenseth did it at martinsville a short track

Where did you see or how did you come to the conclusion that most people would say Matt should get a steep penalty ? In a recent poll 60 percent says Matt should not be punished......and I gotta agree with the poll.

Just let them have a scrap on the infield like they use to and maybe NASCAR will be worth watching again. JMO

Anyone who chooses to do anything that alters the outcome of the positions in this race or in the Chase, we will act quickly and severely, ... If we see anyone attempting to manipulate the outcome of this race, the Chase, or any race from here on out, we will handle it. You've never seen that here, and you never will."

just for grins "I've been called a redneck myself, and that's OK. I'm proud of that. I have no bones about that. However, it's not a very nice term to use any more, I don't think, because it's been stereotyped in such a bad way.

What I find comical is they invoke "safety" and "being a Chase competitor" as some kind of justification for punishing Kenseth. Not 3 weeks ago in Kansas when Mat was the victim it didn't matter that he was racing to stay in the Chase or that wrecking on a speedway isn't exactly the safest thing to do.

I don't disagree with the penalty necessarily. But they need to have a single rule for deliberate contact, either its always OK or it never is, or its ok when racing for position but not ok otherwise, or its ok in the last 3 laps if you are racing for the win but not ok in any other situation. Just some kind of clear rule so everyone knows what is acceptable and what isn't. So everyone knows when safety matters and when NASCAR is willing to throw safety out the window.

Because it sure didn't look any safer when Kenseth was sliding sideways in a corner all 4 tires smoking at 150 mph as Logano cruised past at Kansas. And the resulting elimination of Kenseth from the Chase was more damaging to him than this one race was to Logano. At least Logano gets another two chances to make it in for Homestead. For Kenseth its over, thanks to Logano.

Someone from NASCAR, right before manipulating situations with drivers to affect the outcome of the Chase and races themselves.

That would be the man Mike Helton, if they can t end a race under I am not watching kinda funny that way

I believe Kenseth still had a chance to continue in the "Chase" had he won at Talladega? In any case it boils down to who you favor whether what happened at Kansas was dirty or not. As for what kenseth did Sunday that was a low class move that he didn't pull with Stewart when he ran him into the infield at Daytona.

I don't like how Nascar does the chase, but I do still watch when I can. Probably next year they will have the cars that are still in the chase start 1/2 a lap ahead on the starts and restarts. Two seperat races!

NASCAR or WWE......? This has been my thought for the past several years. Changing rules whenever they (NASCAR) thought it was or was not needed or maybe did it benefit a race team, manufacturer or just bunch the field up? Hum, that should make you think because it can't be denied attendance is WAY down. Watch the races on TV and they work so hard to focus only on the track so you don't get the view of the half full grandstands. Very different from the races severel years ago when the network cameras would pan back so you could take in the enormity of attendance and enthusiasm of the racing fan. DONE.....!!!!
So with that said I need someone on here to explain why the past few years all of a sudden NASCAR has been having these mysterious yellow flags in the closing laps (10 to 20 laps) of the majority of the races to close gaps and maybe make a race out of what was going to be another runway finish? Not a fan favorite...... Oh... and why, just why can we not go back to the rules of our local dirt tracks where you take someone out and you're put to the back of the field or maybe parked. With the Bump and run which we all know in a large majority of cases ends up to be a Dump and run ends with NO penalty (at all) to the more aggressive driver. The announcers / NASCAR explain it away or just plain shrug it off as just racing for position........? If the car in front of you is blocking and you're car is faster just take the time to work and set-up the slower car in front of you but don't take them out. I would like to see the possible aftermath of being sent to the back of the field and of course taking out a few or many more competitors. That's bull

The way I see it, leave it up to the drivers. There has to be a level of mutual respect for one another, I mean we are at the highest level of motorsports. Any driver should know, "if I do something stupid, Im gonna get it back". I had no problem with Logano bumping kenseth for the win, but turn about is fair play, he had to know repayment was coming. Man up and take responsibility. Rivalries and wrecks are good for attendance, however Nascar making rulings like they did is not.
