I like looking at the old pictures, I remember white city when i was younger. could the red and white 75 possibly be ray guss jr. Thr picture was a little blurry could not read the sponsors, either way like the old pictures.

Do not want to step on your thread but go to dirtfans.com, go to bottom of page to dirt racing 101 and it will bring you to a page of drivers. most seem to be in florence and eldora area but there are many names you will recognize and a few locals, ed dixon, kevin gundaker, cc corbin, and wib spalding were a few i noticed. many pictures of the old camaros through the wedge days.

Do you have any more pics from White City or Tri-City in 1987? My dad ran a latemodel for Larry Gould & raced it that year. I don't think I have any pics of that car. It is one of the only cars I don't have a pic of. It is a white car with a yellow #2.
Thanks,
Dustin

me to. i also ran a red monte.#4 i'm the one the last race of i think it was 1987. ran off the end of the track and went threw the fence. that got the car air born and i landed on the back of a lincoln in the parking lot. is rick rhoads still racing. remember the big paying shows there. i sure miss that track.

Dustin i think Mark Paule has a pic of that car on the wall in his shop if not him i know somebody that does if i think of it il let you know. Arthur doesnt have any? Aaron

Yeah, I remember the big $3000 to win street stock race they had one year. Ohio's Butch Schroeder, who later ran sprint cars with the All Star Circuit of Champions, won the 50 lap A-Main in a white and red #55 Camaro. But what I really remember is that they had something like 170 entries, and they time trialed. It took forever.

I think my favorite car from those shows would be Arkansas racer Mike Harris' '56 Plymouth.

I remember a sunday show there in the early "80's" when we would just make it to school on monday morning, wow were they long but some awesome
latemodel shows. My biggest memory was a crash down the backstretch when FISCHER nailed one of the huge tires that was protecting the light pole, totally destroying his car, we all helped search the track for his glasses after the crash because they flew off from insde his helmet.
Also remember the street stock parking on top of the lincoln in the parking lot. And LUMPY parking in a tree.
WOW those were the days.

How about the Fourth of July show when they had to stop the races shortly before midnight so the fireworks display would still be on the 4th instead of the 5th. LOL

i have the doubious destinction of being the first race car upside down there..no walls at ether end,had my old vega modified hung out in turn 3,well there was a ute tire about half way through the turn on the top side, cliped it with my rear bumper, spun me clock wise, poped the left front, the rim dug in and over i went..we fliped it back over, changed the LF and i finished the race, was running 6th in the feature when the rr blew out..i belive that was the very first car race at the track as it had been a flat track for moter cycles...As far as the 3K bomber race i had roaches nova there, after the first 30 or 40 cars qualified the track was totally gone,i went out 125th or so,they say i was shoting dirt rooster tails 50 feet in the air (some where there is a picture of that car that night on the track)qualified around 50th.which i thought was great,,but after the deal with the flagman,me and jimmy loaded up and went home..not much desire to race after that...

I believe there are pics out there of Lumpy flying toward and then landing in the tree. One of the craziest things I've heard of happening at a racetrack.

White City is a place filled with great memories for me.

It was my dad's favorite track and I got to spend a lot of time in the scoring tower with him, craning my little head to watch the cars go by directly underneath me.

The driver's clubhouse was legendary after the races. The drivers waited for their paychecks after the races, had a few beers, listened to music and played pool or darts. Looking back, it was surreal -- drivers and crews getting along so well with alcohol involved.

As a 10-year-old, I pushed a quarter in the jukebox to play a song (actually, two for a quarter then). I found the buttons for my song --- I don't remember it. Mike Wallace, then driving the red #6 late model, was playing pool with his crew.

He called out to me and said "Hey buddy, could you play Katmandu?" I hated the song at the time, but what 10-year-old, race-loving boy doesn't do whatever a hero tells them. Twenty-one years later, it's still one of my favorite childhood moments.

There was nothing like those two-day street stock nationals. Dave Jones and John Seets built cars especially for that race, knowing they could take home a good-sized paycheck. The year escapes me, but it was a year Seets came in as the favorite to win and was strong from the start of the show.

But a driver from Wisconsin, named Jeff Haugland (sp?), came in a ratted-out camaro and beat the entire 120-plus car field. It was races like those and the statewide late model races that made White City a special place.

I was heartbroken when that place went under.
