Past Track Champions of Godfrey Speedway

67&7&7fan

Love the DIRT!
Does anybody have any idea how to find out who the Past Track Champions of each class of each year over the entire time Godfrey Speedway has been in operation?

I am not trying to be a smart a--, but seriously would like to find out!
I would like to possibly make up some type of scrap/record book.

Unfortunatley most tracks and racing organizations don't keep good records. The SCCA tending to be the exception.

One could dig through the Alton Telegraph and probably get the past 32 years worth of champions........as the Telegraph has been pretty good about covering the results at the track. Back when Landon and Spalding owned the track Steve Porter in the Sports Department was covering racing and he's still at the newspaper.

Here's what I could quickly put together........this list is by year.

I have most of the champs since 1983.

Please help fill in the blanks.

(I was unable to figure out how to get the list to show up in columns.........in an effort to make this more readable I bolded the middle column (class name) to help more easily separate the columns of information.)

Jack........

I've been around racing over 30 years now.

Here's a few things I've learned in 25+ years of media and PR work promoting and working with EVERY form of racing St. Louis offers.

Most people don't understand the benefit/payoff of publicity/PR.

Track promoters/sanctiong bodies have a HUGE list of things they have to do to make a track/event function. Track prep, food, rules, insurance, local ordinances/politics, safety, employees, security, promotions, restrooms, sponsors, spectators.......well you get the idea. Recording the history of the track and storing the results is not likely to be on their top 100 items to do. They just don't have the time. It is one tough job.

Most have no idea what is involved in getting something in the newspaper or on the radio or TV. (One local racing reporter was surprised to learn that for a 5-minute on-air TV piece with local TV he spent 100+ hours coordinating the details.)

Local racers are amazing.......they hold a full-time job, raise a family, and find time to pay for and race their favorite form of the sport. Today, their racing effort is expected to be almost as professional as a Schrader or Edwards who have a large, paid, full-time staff to help them.

The fact is it takes a lot of people to pull off one race show or one racing vehicle. Sometimes it helps to understand what the other job requires and to remember to say thanks for all the things they do get done.

terry cox won A championship but i cant remember what year and louie janssen won several also lori roach won a few but im good to remeber what year i was born so remembering these years is a task lol

I know from an old 1980 Godfrey Speedway program that we have that Mike Hammerle won the LM title in '79. I think Jake Seets won the limited sportsman title that season.
