Remember the days when racers used to show up in open air haulers? Ken Schrader plans to go old school for a few races this summer with the hauler featured on the back of this all-new shirt. What do you think? Is retro back?

IMO, anyone who shows up at a race track with a open air hauler should get a bonus. Back in the day many people came to the track only because they seen a racecar at a gas station or going down the highway. Nowdays with all the enclosed haulers only the die hard fans know whats inside. We need to put more butt's in those stands besides the die hards.

I agree that it was a cool thing as a kid to see a race car on an open trailer. I would get all pumped up and talk my family into taking me to watch them. Enclosed trailers are awesome for drivers/owners, but it just doesnt appeal to the kids the way seeing a race car on the highway does.

trailer.old school, open???back when i started i used a team of mules to pull my jalopy to the track...
I can believe that. Besides if a local racer is not going to travel why not use an open hauler. It can still carry what they need.

I used to tow with an open trailer and it was cool seeing the kid's faces when driving by but sometimes you would get people to stay along side of you and check out the car which made it a little tense at times. I say let the cars ride in the open air and try to attract more fans it worked when i was a kid. Big Paul

I know a bunch of you old timers out there recall the days when you unloaded the car outside the track, threw the spare tires, jack, tools, fuel, and all the rest into the race car, be it a 48 ford coupe,. a 55 chevy or a 58 ford and drove it into the infield!!!! that was YOUR pit---ah yes, the days of the open trailer or hauler---I miss em . !

we have used a ramp over open trailer for our late model for 6yrs. its fun when you stop for gas or eats and see the people that come over and start asking questions or take pictures. we pull 200 miles one way and sometimes an enclosed would be nice but i don't regret what we have.

true story,,many seasons ago i lived in the central west end,, on the way to st.chas, with my A-CAR on my ramp truck,,we were on north kings highway and natrual br..stoped at the light, some young kids asked "how fast will it go?"my co-pilot marty thompson ,who always had a dry witt, looked them youn-uns right in the eye and said 250mph...WOW one of the kids exclaimed...if ya all dont know who marty is,he fielded a car for pappy don grey, who at one time was the oldest driver to win a race at I55

I still have my old school bus haller from imca days carried 3 xtra trans,3 xtra rea's,and xtra complete motor with self contained cherry picker and torches, air comp, welder, and slept 6 w air cond wife and 2 kids life was fun racing was great
imca rules the same at all the tracks had 3-5 nite tours. the good days lil joe

Its funny a few years back I said on this very site that enclosed trailers were killing this sport and all i got was bashed.....Back in the good ole days When we hauled our race cars to St Charles and BC "except Pevely because we lived a mile from it" we had least 1 to 3 cars follow us to the track on many many occasions over the many years we raced all 3 tracks .... Racers pulling there race cars on open trailers should get a discount for sure and I hope to see Kenny roll in the track with this rig and Ill go buy a couple of his Tshirt's

Sorry...... The new format messed me up .

Schrader had a open air ramp truck hauler back in the day . I remember haulin the cars all over the midwest with it. We hauled Pat Walsh's 55 chevy up to Jeff City with it for a 4th of July race. We had 4 of us in the cab! I ended up riding home belted up in the race car so I could have some space, then it started raining! Oh the fond memories of those days gone by................

We hauled the sprint car with an open trailer, mainly cuzz the good city of Kirkwood would give us less grief when it was in the driveway instead of the enclosed. :) But it was a blast hauling it down the roads stylin and profillin, waving back to the folks honking and waving.

In 1961 Bignotti towed 2-wheel open trailer from California with the winning Watson roadster, AJ Foyt driving. I have photo of Foyt helping to unload the race car. Amazing what it takes to win Indy today.

I remember when Schrader didn't use a hauler at all and just drove the car to the track at Lake Hill. It wasn't much of a drive on Forest Ave from his dad's shop which was right next to the track! I think it's a very cool thing to do and he did this about 10 years ago too.

Some more cool old trailers/haulers...

HERMAN HANRADT reove a shorter distance from his house to BC,,back in the 60s i would tow my A car to st chas..with a hand cranked tow truck that belonged to don bass,,he needed his truck back for monday morning when he opended his shop at papin and vandaventer,,i lived at west pine n kingshighway,,made a few late night banzi runs up forest park av..never got caught..LOL

I love my open trailor, its great to pull into a car wash, cover what i dont want wet, wash the car and it gets air dried on the way home... luckly i dont have to go far to race so i dont have to worry about everything sitting out in a hotel parking lot over night and "walking away"... And yeah, its great to see kids looking and pointing out of car windows and coming up to us at gas stations and asking questions.. No matter if I am running behind or not, I give them all the attention i can cause they are our next generation of race car drivers....
