Top 3 UMP Modified Points going into Eldora..

Totally lost? Partially. The attempt on the microphone was to invoke a response from a racer whom I had interviewed 9 times previously this season. Rather than ask the same old tired questions, I thought it would be prudent to get an opinion on that statement. But back to the points... the UMP point system is very difficult to understand with throw-out nights and bonus points if you don't have a grid or stats sheet at your disposal. It would help to have some form of guidance from the sanction as to the different scenarios needed for each driver to win, similar to what NASCAR does when it's time to make their chase. Or like what MLB, NHL, NFL does when it's getting close to their post-season.
It's actually pretty simple..

UMP points for normal car counts is 75 for 1st, 70 for 2nd, 65 for 3rd.. There entire break down is on their website.

UMP points provide bonus points in the form of one point for every car over 25 cars with a max bonus of 5 (so once you hit 30 cars, it doesn't matter how many more cars are there over 30, you still only get 5 bonus points). So when an event has 30 or more cars such as Mod Mania, the winners gets 80 points, 75 for 2nd, 70 for 3rd and so on.

UMP only counts the best 30 finishes for Modifieds.

Michael Long has over 30 wins, therefore all 30 of his finishes are 75 points or more (when he had wins with bonus points)

Mike Harrison has 20 wins, but has more of those wins with bonus points (that is how he is so close in the points to Long even though he has 10+ fewer wins). This is also why Harrison has some 70 point nights that he can still replace.

As far as scenerios on how the points can be won at Eldora, that is still a big undertaking to say because they run 4 feature events on Thursday and Friday along with one feature on Saturday.

If Michael Long were to win all 3 nights, that would add 15 points to his total.

Michael Harrison could run 2nd all three nights and add 15 points to his total. Any event he wins adds 10 points to his total, any event he runs 2nd in he adds 5 points to his total.

Since there are 4 features on Thursday and Friday, Long and Harrison could both win on those two nights and Harrison would still take the point lead because Long would add 10 points to his total and Harrison would add 20 points to his total.

" Just find it really odd that a race track or anyone else is asking people for donations for a driver to go race. Never heard of that before. "

- Are you kidding? Every winter and spring around Springfield/Jacksonville virtually every race driver with a race car has a benefit or auction to support their race team. We as race tracks give a large number of pit passes, grandstand tickets and other items to the race parties and events - which is a way of helping the race teams. In fact I'm still getting pit passes in the pit gate that were auctioned at fundraisers 8 months ago. We promote and advertise those events for our racers when we can as well.

A few months ago we raised and donated a fair amount of money for a race team involved in an accident - some of which we hope or intended to go toward getting a race team back to the track - which has happened. Heck, we helped organize a fundraiser a few years ago at Jacksonville for a local racer that was going to the Chili Bowl - because we knew some local fans wanted to get behind and support the effort. If you haven't heard of a race track helping race teams when it can be done in a fair and even-handed manner - then you haven't paid much attention to the sport.

It's no different when we have a special project being done at the track and ask racers for labor and help. If it's ok for us to ask them for help on occasion, what's so bad about a track trying to organize a way for local fans to support a local racer to make an attempt to win a National Championship? It's not like we were helping him raise money for a weekly trip to Pevely or something.

In Quincy you are either a Michael Long fan or you aren't. You are either a Mark Burgtorf fan or you aren't. You are a Tony Dunker fan or you arent. And the list goes all the way down the field. That's something that makes our sport - and particularly our weekly racing at Quincy the entertainment it is. We for sure don't favor the 18L and not sure where some have drawn that conclusion. If you were to ask Michael, there are things we did this year that hurt his chances that he's not particularly happy about. But we like him and respect him no different than we like and respect every single one of those that choose to spend their hard earned money to sit in a race car, smash the loud pedal and turn left to entertain us. I can't walk through the pits at eitherof our tracks and say "I don't like that guy". We might disagree with some of them on occasion and might not appreciate comments we read from them later - but they chose to buy a race car, strap in, race and put on a show for our fans. How could you not like any one of them?

I assure you that if it was any other racer at the race track in the same position, we as a track would do what we could to help them if it didn't create an issue of favoritism or unfairness for the other racers. As we noted.. our points at Quincy ended Sunday night. At that point, we are nothing more than you... fans. And as fans of the sport, we hoped to have an opportunity to see the 18L in Eldora taking his shot. Win or Lose he needed to be there to conclude a spectacular season, much of which we were able to witness at Quincy.

Keep on preaching Ken. I attend almost every week at Quincy and I can vouch for everything you just said.

The poster that made the outlandish claim that you are responding to has no idea what he is talking about.

Well long wouldn't have to ask for donations if he would race at the bigger shows that pay more money and actually win instead of staying home and cherry picking that's no champion thats just your avg joe racer period I dont see harrison or any other locals ever ask for money to go to other tracks. And whoever said he was planning to go to Eldora your higher than a kite he was really hoping to have it wraped up in mod mania cause he was no where near gonna run there. I hope he does run there and all the wins and track championships he won mean sh$$ cause he wont win the most important ump title which is like the world series, super bowl, nba title etc of dirt track racing. So good luck to all that run out there this weekend sure wish I could get some donations to take off work and get a free night out there to watch lol ;-)

Can you not read? Several posts have indicated that he has not asked for a dime. It was a good will gesture by the track promoter.

As for your cherry picking comment, Michael has young children and he can not run all over the country. He races at three tracks where he can get to and back home easily.

Some of you are so jealous of his success that it is ridiculous.

Did dirt boy head butt you so hard last Friday night that you can no longer read. Long hasn't asked for a damn dime!!!

THANKS for clearing that up Ken. awesome gesture. With the cost of this sport anybody with half a brain would know how much it could help. You just gained a fan and racer that will support your track any chance I get.

So Long running Tri-City and I-55 every weekend is cherry picking??????

Someone needs to get out to some other tracks.

We have THE BEST modified racing in the country right here in our backyard!!!

Best of luck to Long, Harrison, and Young. The fans will win on this one.

Thanks for the info. I still hate math, and can use all the help I can get when it comes to that part of the deal. And I agree wholeheartedly with real racing fan... the fans are the real winners here.

Well with last nights rainout young is out so its a 2 man battle now. Still congrats to the drivers. Been an eventful year with all the rainouts

Congrats to him. Long didn't get a fair shake imo but it is what it is. Not sure how you get full bonus points for a 27 car field!

don't they still race tomorrow? even if he only got the 2 bonus points for a 27 car feature, he still picked up 7 points on Michael Long. i was thinking they still had to race Saturday though..

This is why I rarely check this board. We have people who call themselves fans that brutally attack promoters and racers for everything. It has a very negative impact on the sport. We as fans of dirt track racing are our own worst enemy.
