Can I use a 283 in Pure Stock?

Hey Racer94.I figured out the specs and heres what i come up with.A 30 over 305 with a zero deck and flatops comes out to about 10.7 to 1 with 58 cc heads and a .038 gasket.A 30 over 350 comes out to about 10.00 to 1 with the same gasket and 73 cc heads(441).You are losing alot of compresssion with the small 3.7660 bore 305(30 over). Are you saying that .7 tenths of a point of compression is going to equal or out do 45 cubic inches, not to mention the bigger 4.030 bore will breath better do to unshrouding the valves more.I cant see how it will even be close. Also , a 283 wont come close to touching a big block in stock form or modified form if you compare apples to apples. An ls6 made around 450 hp and over 500 lb of torque.A 283 made i think 315 in it best form fuel injection. The 2 4s were close to the same.I am not seeing where you are coming from with this info.Im not saying a 15 to one 283 with ported aluminum heads and a huge roller cam Big carbs etc wont outdo a 74 454 with 8 to one compression, but apples to apples , i think you are way off.Again, this is just my opinion. Can you give some reasons why you say that, and why you still think a 305 will outrun or make the same power as a 350 when basically the only diff is .7 point of compression.I am not buying it.Ps you can also run a cam with .030 more valve lift in a 305, but the heads are done at 400 lift stock)(legal) so i dont think it will help alot.Again just looking to debate, not upset you...

im gonna hit the point of you saying the 283 wont outdo a big block..in the early chevelles the 283 would blow the big blocks away from stop light to stop light, that is fact, trust me i have done it many times(also ask don klein)..on a short track like belle vegas the 283 will run with the 350 anyday, and getting a car freed up and smooth will only make things better...when you compare a 350 and a 283 the only thing a 350 has over it is cubic inch(torque) but the stroke off the 283 will make it come off the corner, and really turn some rpms and come plum alive 3/4 way down the strait...now on the 305 and 350..your numbers are correct, but the extra lift out of the cam will give you a little more as well as timing and if you can deck the heads more that will help too.when you say the 350 breaths more that is not always the key, sometimes small long ports work better.and besides you cannot run a big cam in this class to make it breath much more than they do anyway.the key is getting everything matched..you can bump up the compression some more on the 305 and the only place the 350 is getting the 305 is in cubic inch, that can be made up on the 305 by gearing accordingly..i see 355 blow away 420 every year, that is 65 cubic inch difference...and if ya wanna talk about stock bore engines.the 283 ran with the 454,that is 171 cubic inch difference and alot of stroke difference,so that tells you my opinion on cubic inch...see what i am getting at yet???

Yes racer94 and...build a 283 with a 327 crank..and see what happend. That is a running..tight winding hard pulling engine...and will run with the best of them..and last forever.

A 283 with a 3.25 in crank is a 307.. Very common from the factory in vans , and station wagons, in the early 70's. The longer stoke crank increased the torque while still being short enough to wind high. My personal favorite is my ID The 302, or 301 as hot rodders called then. They would punch a 283 block .120 with domes, and a Duntov 30-30 cam, and eat the big blocks for luch in the 1/8.

Yes 302..sorry..you were correct...they went .100 plus on the bore..big pistons..and excellent rpm band(8,500-9,000). Were little hard to keep cool..most ran 2 radiators.

Stating the facts. Ask David Parker, Ricky Hubner, Bill Ernst Robby Benson ect. ect. any of the guys that ran Street stocks a couple of years ago when I ran TCS with them. These guys still race there. ( Ill be back next year with a new driver in the seat) . I ran a 40 over 305 with forged flat top pistons, over hauled the heads ( nothing fancy) , installed a monster cam, used the thin head gaskets, used the old bus style factory 2 barrel intake and a rochester carb, headers . I ran with these guys and out ran these guys every week and I can say without a doubt that none of them ran less than a 350.
Any of these guys will tell you it can be done. They know, I proved it...
Motor is just part of it. Setup is the key to a fast car. Small motors do wonders on a slick track .

Not to argue just stating the known facts .

There is no mention of the 283 in the Allied rule book, but I know they have been run in this class in recent years. I talked with Ralph Joseph (Allied tech guy) and he says they have allowed 283's to run in the past but most run 307 or 350 in chevy's. He also said it would be discussed at the next Allied meeting. He said they probably could be allowed to run depending on which head is on them.

Does anyone know when Allied meets and is the public welcome?? Thanks.

Do you have a cam lift rule? If not you can run power packs, and a Duntov 30-30 cam. You will have all the mid-high range power you need, but you have to turn it hard. You will be lacking the dome pistons, and be running flat tops. It will start to come in at @3400, and pull through 8500 With good springs.

Not only can she drive ,Cassie can crew-chief also!!! :D

Hey Racer 94.I guess we just have a difference of opinion.Thats what makes racing fun.Either way,it is fun to debate things and see peoples experience /opinions.I am not sure if you race now , or if you are racing this coming year, but if so, i hope you do well and have a good year.Ill catch ya later, and if a 283 or 305 win i will come on here and say you are right (hahahahaha).Take it easy.......

i do race and will be running a late model and modifeid this season, have raced since i was 8 in many different classes,as well i wish you luck this season and i am not the only one who knows a 283 or 305 can win..i havent ran one since i ran a street stock 8 years ago,but still think they can hold their own.....
