Class to be dropped at Highland Speedway!

If you think driving a hornet is easy. just watch the video that rob shaw put out showing a bunch of late model and modified drivers at granite city in hornets. most spun out all had trouble handeling! thats proof

I don't think dropping a class is the answer. I'm totally fine with alternating a week off for the classes. It gives the driver a chance to spend time with family, try new tracks etc.
Lots of good points made though. Especially the starting on time point.
I believe the Hornets brings in new blood, and dropping them would be a bad move in my opinion.

Just heard from a reliable source that if you are a "career" hornet driver , you may want to find somewhere else to run. You all have said it. It is a beginner class. I like the list of drivers that Rob put on here. Only thing is, they moved up. Also was told that if they do stay, expect some drastic rule changes to get them back to a beginner class. Some guys are spending more on their wraps than they should be spending on their entire car. A Tech guy has already been found so all the changed computers, rear steer, and all the other fun stuff will be gone. Hope this makes some of you help with your racing decisions. Been a long time coming.

Some guys are spending more on their wraps than they should be spending on their entire car. this is a dumb comment you can sometimes get a wrap cheaper than you can get cut vinyl. people want there cars to look nice for the sponsors.

First off, It doesn't cost much more to wrap a car for me then to letter it. The class should look nice, it appeals more to the fans as a credible class when they do. Second, I also made it clear that this is the ONLY affordable class for some of us. You take that away and you'll have half the cars you have now. They can't afford to do that! With six or seven different winners this past season, it was the most competitive class out there. My car won the track championship with a rookie driver, and I try hard to help everyone in the Hornet class to make them all competitive as possible. By the way, I'm currently building a new car and anyone from the Fair board can stop by so I can show them just how little I spend to make a competitive car!

PS. Put the cars to stock as much as you can! That's the way it should be!! But keep in mined, if you differ from other tracks, you won't get any of their cars!!!

In the end, if they force the veterans out of this class. They won't be forcing them to move up...... Instead, they will be forcing them out of racing all together.

I don't like where this is going...gonna be giving up some of the best racing around and gonna fill their spot with wht? Some dam b mod junk like you did with the sportsmens that's got nothing but junk in it. Their is only about 5 safe b mods at highland and the rest is all sportsmen sh-t that shouldn't even be allowed in the class.

That is one of the biggest problems with that class. To many veterans. Rule change will let someone else have a chance to win. Your car with rookie driver did do well. I just dont understand how there were always three packs of cars. Fast cars not so fast and true learning cars????? I just hope they do it right and do not have to drop the class. At this point, I say be done with them and bring in something else.

Here is the 2012 top ten in points.. I don't see too many veterans on this list!

1 Kenny Elliott (R) 2579

2 47L Christian Lee 2578

3 97 Bobby Funderburk 2520

4 1B,8B Robbie Bindrim 2323

5 19* Josh Bauer 2268

6 7S Kate Smith 2190

7 81LE Lacey Egbert 2055

8 128 Zach Schantz 2049

9 121V Rick Viviano 1978

10 22 Duane Dubree (R)

There are three packs of cars in every class Scott! lol

I think Scott needs to man up and give Rob a call. Rob can give them a lot of insight on this class. Maybe even possibly let Rob be the tech guy. I mean seriously guys i know Rob personally and idon't think most realize how much Rob helps other drivers with their cars when they are having problems and it always works and WOW guess what it comes at no or very little cost to the driver. Folks this is the most affordable class out there. I personally dont want to see the class go at all. It is a very good learning curve for our future drivers. People wake up you dont need to change the computer do the rear steer thing as WISHIWAS stated or any of that, it all comes down to understanding the car and the rules. People would be surprised to find out that most of these cars are not cheated up as most think. People wake up this class needs to go no where or even take a week off. It comes down to what i said in a earlier post! Just simply get your chit together and run the show in a timely manner.

As I remember This class was started x years ago because Highland Speedway was in financial trouble and needed a way to help get them out. So the hornet class was started and went over very well and still is a very good class. It brought alot of young racers into the sport and was and still is a very good starting level for the person that wants to race and doesnt have deep pockets. This is your warning If you were to drop that class it would put you back into a deeper hole than you are in now. The amount of money that this class brings in compared to what is paid out for this class would be no brainer and should never be considered to drop this class. It has nothing to do if you like watching this class are another better I do enjoy and have seen some of the best races time after time in this class. I have nothing to do with any class but I just thought I would put a little insight on why this class was started and why I feel they need to keep it

Great post!

Midgets, micro,s or something like that would be great if they do away with hornets

Im with Dirtboy on this one. I believe the micros will be running a partial schedule anyway. After seeing the video of the MOWA sprint week race I have to say this track needs more open wheel races. Open Wheel racing provides more side by side racing than any other form of racing...and you have to run clean or suffer the consequences too. I take in the occasional late model or modified show and I have appreciation for them however, IMO open wheel racing is much better and puts the fan more on the edge of their seat.

Bring in the POWRi once or twice...have MOWA back again for their sprint week and another show...run micros on a limited schedule...any open wheel race I have seen video of or seen in person at this track has been amazing!

its not that they are true learning cars, some people just dont know how to drive or are scared to go fast but they still want to try. and i dont know about you, but if i was to have never raced before and i wanted to i would rather go out and buy a hornet for maybe a grand and race it, rather than spending five grand or more on an upper class car. rob is right he helps out everyone anyway he can, so you cant just boot someone out of a class because they have raced in that division before. new racers can race for something the veterans cant, and thats rookie of the year. rookies can win it all too and that has obviously been proven. the hornets are a huge class at highland, and any track for that matter. in my opinion the hornets and street stocks put on a better show than the mods and the late models, theyre just more exciting, closer racing, and a heck of a lot cheaper.. just saying

I vote to dump the hornets & B-Mods and run Late Models, Crates, A-Mods & Street Stocks or Sportsmans. "The best show in town"

Years ago when street stock was started there was a rule if you won the track championship you had to move up. so this has been tried before. Also yes i would like to see some open wheel races at highland but just like the late models guys will come for a little while then it to will fall off. theres not much highland can do with the track they have tried banking the corners more the groove just went to the top it was still 1 lane. with the ditch off the back straight redesigning the track is out. maybe make it smaller like belleville that might work.

I don't normally post on here but this is really starting to get ignorant.... The hornets are not a "beginner" class they are a low budget class. As long as the cars stay stock then who cares what they do to make them look better. Looks don't change how well you can drive. There was plenty of nights that the 47L spanked me and guess what.... His car doesn't have a wrap. I think it is great that people do what they can to make the cars look good in every class. And about this "boot the vets" crap... That's not going to solve any problems either. If you people want to get ignorant like that then you might want to start complaining about the great veteran drivers in the other classes like Harrison, kloos, Zobrist, korte, and the list can keep going. Just because others go out there and get their butts handed to them by those guys doesn't mean they want them to move up, they want to beat them!

There will definitely be more open wheel races in 2013. That was some of the best racing. Rob you are not helping my argument. lol Highland has too many classes and not enough time to get them in. There has been some pretty serious discussion about rotating the hornets and open wheel cars. More information is supposed to be released by Thanksgiving. Just thought you should know.

No need to redesign it ,just find some QUALITY dirt to replace the stuff they have now and get the right prep guy and equipment(Power Harrow). If you remember how racey it was in the mid-80's,then you know what I mean!!!! 2 grooves and some banking, just ask "Revin" how racey it was in 1986...:):):)

Couldn't agree more! By making veterans move up like Shaw said, if they can't afford it they won't move up, they will sell their equipment. I've never drove a hornet but tracks struggle without a hornet car count... it takes just 2 or 3 hornet race teams to pay their who purse... hell I've saw hornet teams with 4 or 5 guys in their pit area. Some have more paid pit passes than some late model teams.. and when it is teched correct there is no reason why any car can't win on any given night... you don't have to have the high tire bill, you run regular pump gas, and don't have to spend high dollar on suspension parts like LMs... Macon runs multiple hornet classes.. they have amateur hornets, which are for less experienced drivers... if you win 10 features in a season you move up to pro hornets, which is another class. Then one night a month they add a high school hornet class, which would have a son the chance to race his dads hornet... and I think they even ran a Jr high hornet class a few times... yeah it ran the show later but Macon had a weekly show done by 10:30 with ease... Bob knows how to run an organized show and get it done quick.

I kinda got off subject but if I were highland I would be more concerned with getting a racey track... at highland especially in the LM and mod class your pill draw can make or break your night... we drive 2 hours to race on Saturday night and pass highland to get there partially for that reason. The track is one lane 85% of the time... Macon is a one lane track 15% of the time. They also qualify LMs every week. And when I've been there as a spectator I've heard a lot of people upset about them getting rid of draft beer.. there might be a reason why they did this but just thought I'd mention it so the track aware because we don't need any tracks shutting down if it something as simple as beer sales that can keep a track open
