Thanks for a great day at Lake Hill

What a great day! Thanks to Kim for giving everyone a chance to visit Lake Hill and hear the stories. It is unbelievable what you did for a bunch of people and a sport that you really didn't know. My Mom grew up at Lake Hill being dragged there by my grandparents. A few weeks ago, Dave Mueller called and she went out and got to drive around the track. She was like a kid on Christmas. I followed all the hardwork on the forum and am amazed by the time, hard work and money put into Saturday's reunion. The people who stepped up and made it happen are incredible. To all of you who made it happen, thank you. Because of your belief that you could get it done and that people would come out, 4 generations of my family got to hang out and share stories. I spent the day with my grandfather who raced at Lake Hill and was Secretary of Allied Racing, my mother who sold programs and baby sat racer's children, my great-Aunt and Uncle and my son who got to hear "really cool stories", see "really cool cars" and meet "real live racecar drivers." So many of my family stories are about St. Louis racing and Lake Hill was always the place mom talked about. It was nice to meet the people of her stories. THANK YOU!

Thank-you KEG and the Stl.Fan club for this wonderful reunion. It was a great day. Anyone that missed this I'm sorry (it was AWESOME). Thanks again to create more memories at Lake Hill Speedway!!!!!!!!!

This event was one of the biggest highlights of my life. I have never met such a great group of people who put forth such enthusiasm and energy. There were many time I asked myself "Why am I working this hard for one day?" Well, I found out. It was worth ALL of the effort. We had NO problems and the crowd just brimmed with excitement.

There have two really significant times for me at the track so far. The first was pumping out the water from the track where the water didn't seem to go down, but instead the track seemed to emerge from the ground. And the second was when the cars all fired up their engines on Saturday and starting making laps. You could just feel the crowd getting choked up. I know I did.

Yes, the past several months turned into an all consuming venture for a party I got swept up with. And yes, many asked "Why so much work for one day?" Well, now we all know. It couldn't have been any better or worth any less effort.

But keep in mind, this happened because of the many volunteers who put huge efforts into the clean up and build up. Here are few and for those I miss, post a new message with their names. There were so many I can't remember them all:

Fabick Catepillar - Mike Gwinn
John Shrader Grarage - John Shrader
Rolla Auto Salvage - Joe Hauck
Traffic Control - Ron Jones
K&K Supply
Summit Earthworks - Kyle Kasparek
Sieveking Fuel
Miner Towing - Mark Miner
R&R Sprint Cars - Phil Rideout
Rob's Tree Service
Commercial Drain Cleaning - Bob Mahoney
Home Depot
John Bardol
and Kenny Wallace

Thanks Again For All Of Your Support

First of all, I would like to say thank you to Kim and everybody who put together the event. We had a great time. I would like to buy a photo that I saw yesterday. It is an aerial shot of the track in it's prime. Does anyone know how could obtain that picture? Thanks.

I took a picture of that picture.....Here's how it turned out...

Everyone who had a part in making this happen did a great job. Thanks for giving people like myself who never got a chance to see racing at Lake Hill an opportunity to see what it was all about. To make a track that has been closed for several decades into a nicer facility than some active tracks is a pretty big accomplishment.

just a few thoughts of my own,,,first off my thanks go out to all that were involved in getting the track into the condition it was on the 24th,having seen the befor condition in person several years ago ,those involved did work a bit of magic to get it as it is now, kind of like the magic kingdom at disney land for old racers and for those of us that got to make a lap, well,it was for sure the "A" ticket ride.i personally want to thank kim gardner for allowing this to happen, and say what a pleasure it was to meet him,,also lets give mom nature a hand for providing us a super day to hold this deal on,,i also want to thank the 2 girls that handeled the helmet signing duties, shea mcginnitey and hollie garson (how the helmets will be offered is up to the fan club but i think one will be raffeled and the other saved for placement in the midwest motor sports hall of fame in the "lets hope"near future)as for my self i had a blast, got to see fellow racers that i have not seen for 20 years, made a bunch of laps, even a few full throttle blasts down the back stright,in my sportsman car,my kid even got to make several laps, both my kids were very impressed with the days events,,in case some of you are wondering why the #1 car was there(and lets face it,it sure aint for show, just GO) ,back in 1980 i drove the last lap ever run at lakehill in compition on a sunday afternoon in a car very similar,it was some kind of deal to honor rusty wallace,,my plan was to make the last lap sat. but i had been on a run all day and it was time to bug out but no matter who took the last lap on sat.i still have the honor of making the last lap in compition 27 years ago and i am proud to say one of 3 racers still running that ran the place when it was dirt..i got more but its time to go to work,,later,,lenny g.

Old Racer & Announcer

:)I can't begin to tell you what a thrill it was to be at Lake Hill Speedway on the 24th. As an old timer who never missed a race from 1950 thru 1972, it was a once in a lifetime experience to see some of the guys I used to race with and realize that all of us may be seeing each other for the last time in a long lifetime of memories. This was indeed a gift from a very kind and big hearted man. Thank you Kim Gardner and all who helped. I got there very early and didn't want to leave because in my heart I knew this was a one time experience that could not happen but every 35 years for yours truly. After Kenny Shrum thru his arms around me and said hello, I began to get tears in my eyes that didn't leave all day. Now you know, race car drivers don't cry because we are supposed to be "tough." (Ha!) But when Kenny asked me if I wanted to dive his 66/99 around the track after he got thru himself, I turned him down because it was his car & his time to feel what I was feeling about the old days. Thank you anyway for remembering me, Kenny. We had some super memories of the times we both raced against each other for the championship of 1954 and other years. After that, I met so many old drivers that I lost count. I have to say, I regret not recognizing everyone that I knew in the old days until they introduced themselves.(Time is not as kind to the handsome faces of yesterday, is it?) (Ha!) As the track announcer from 1955 thru 1972, I guess I spoke every race driver's name that ever raced there at least once, but to remember their faces after 35 years, is another thing. I can't tell you what it does to a 76 year old man who has only seen three races in person in the last 35 years to be asked to sign autographs because of something he used to do that he figured no one could or would ever remember, except to say it was an extreme honor. In fact the whole experience on Saturday was beyond belief and an honor just to be there and see all the wonderful fans who were too young to even remember Lake Hill, show up on a cold day when they all knew there was not going to be any actual racing but only a bunch of old men re-living their past. Let me say again, Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Forever in your debt Kim and racing fans.......Bruce H.
