You are both correct

I just recently sent Leadfoot a e-mail of the picture of Kenny and Dean from the 1971 awards banquet. It shows them together after receiving their awards.

Anyone know how to get "Gator" the reunion information? know Springfield isn't close, but he may want to make just one more trip to Lake Hill to see his many friends from here.

Please excuse my absence from posting. I have been out of town besides working very hard on track preparations. As you know, we are trying to get everything in place for November 24 (10am to dark). The entrance area has been graded and seeded and some of the grass is finally coming up. Hopefully it will be dry enough to use for parking. We have cleared over half of a lower field near the track, got rid of most of the trees, etc. and have graded and seeded that area. We still need to clear the front portion of pit road, but the back section is cleared and seeded. The track itself is mostly clear but we don't have the interior pumped out ... yet. I hope to see this happen early next week (Oct. 29). The concession stand has four walls but no roof. Not sure if we will be able to get a roof on before the event. The front of the viaduct (toward Forest Ave) has had the brush cut back, but the back side (track side) still needs to be cleared. For safety, I started construction of a block wall at the opening to the track at turn four. The ticket booth and concession stand have a first coat of paint and we hope to have a second coat this coming week.

If anyone would like to help with the last minute details, here's what we could use:
Finish the block wall at turn four (these are landscape blocks that just need to be stacked.)
Pickup and stack the broken blocks around the concession stand.
Build a door for the ticket booth
General cleanup of brush and junk still around the concession and ticket booth area.
Tires - we still have a big pile of tires to haul off.

There have been many volunteers helping put the event together. At the event we look forward to acknowledging everyone's assistance. But until then, thanks to all who have come out and worked so hard. I am still amazed at the many wonderful people I have met since acquiring the track. Makes it hard to focus on the original plan.

Keg,
Can you give me a tire count on the amount of tires you need to haul off? I work at a tire store and can get rid of most if not all but I need a count so I can ask my boss if it's ok to take them to work.

Hotlapped

Took my pickup for about 5 or 6 laps around the place sunday She's rough in a couple of spots but overall she's in good shape

The infield is being pumped out this week. We've removed about 15 tanker loads of muck and mud. Yes, the track is still pretty much intact, but we do have tree roots that lifted the asphalt in places and holes from tearing out the trees. While it would be nice to have everyone do laps, keep in mind that there are no safety feature left in place. It's still pretty dangerous. Maybe we can change that, but right now it is inviting but misleading.

Kent and Flyin Bryan - We have around 53 or so tires that need to be hauled off. It sure would be great if you can help with this.

Also, if anyone has 4' long rebar or other metal posts, we could really use them for the event. We need to mark the parking areas to get as many cars in as possible. But if it rains or is too wet, there goes that idea. I've planted around 300 pounds of wheat and rye trying to get some growth in place. Unfortunately, not much is coming up fast.

Otherwise, the place is looking pretty good. We still need to do cleanup work, remove brush and trees, and other misc. details. Its getting very exciting to see the place unfold.

Good luck with the reunion!

Go figure, I had a nice post put together about my memories of Lake Hill Speedway but lost it jumping around on the site. And I work in the IT industry! So you will get my short version now but hope it still brings back memories for you.

In my early college days of 1971 and 1972 I hosted a weekly radio show while a student at SIU-Edwardsville. Victory Lane kept me busy weekly as I visited tracks such as Belleclair, Tri-City, Highland, St. Charles, and Lake Hill Speedway to report on the races for the show. I wasn't the best reporter in the world but nobody could question my passion for racing. I spent a good share of time at Lake Hill and remember a young Kenny Schrader racing along with Russ Wallace, Harold Workman, and the others I have read about in all the posts. On one of my visits to Lake Hill I remember Kenny allowing me to ride along with him when he made a run to the local auto parts store. I live in the Tampa Bay area now and years later I ran into him while he was running a dirt track race at East Bay Raceway down here and Kenny remembered me from the Lake Hill days. I was also part of the media tour when the NASCAR Grand American division ran their race at Lake Hill in 1971 (I am hoping my memory serves me well here) and I remember meeting big Tiny Lund and I think Buck Baker also ran the race although I believe a racer named Wayne Andrews won that race.

How did I stumble across this post? The other night I ran across the Lake Hill video while surfing the web and wondered what was going on as I thought the track was long gone. I remember watching a NASCAR race in the 80's where they highlighted Rusty Wallace and they spoke about the demise of the track. Funny, but I volunteer at the St. Pete Grand Prix and I ran into Rusty in the course of my duties. He was busy but I so much wanted to talk to him about watching his dad race at Lake Hill.

I hope you all have a great time at the reunion. Keep us out of towners posted how things went (along with pictures) so we can keep the great memories alive. Has anyone thought about contacting Wind Tunnel about this event?

Take care!

Please introduce yourself.

I don't recall having heard of a Victory Lane staffer from 1971 - 1972. Wouldn't that be BEFORE Ken Thompson.

I joined the show in 1981 and was the last one still doing it before it went off the air.

If you'd like more info on "The St. Louis Auto Racing Fan Club Presents the Farewell to Lake Hill Speedway" visit www.stlfanclub.com. The front page has a flyer for the event.

You'll also notice that there will be CDs for sale that day of past memorabilia and there will be videographers there that day taping the days activities who will put together another CD for sale later of what happened on November 24.

Victory Lane

Hi Eileen,

I started the show in 1971. I had just started at SIU and remember sitting in the stands at Belleclair watching the fellow, I believe it was Mark Welch or Walsh, doing a show for the Belleville radio station and, as I was thinking of majoring in Mass Communications, decided to also put together a show. I had to put together a pilot tape and Marv Pruett was kind enough to assist me in this effort. Ken took over for me in 1972 when I left to move to Florida but we worked together for much of that year. We went to the Indy 500 together that year. I understand Ken passed away but if you have anymore information about the show during and after Ken's time I would appreciate it. I really appreciate the information you passed along. I was also a member of the fan club back then and remember Don Figler.

Thanks for the post!
